All The New 40k Combat Patrol Rules
Updated March 13th, 2026, by Rob Baer with new information and links to relevant content.
Combat Patrol is built for fast, smaller games with almost no setup headaches and no list-building, so you can grab the rules, download the missions, pick your faction PDF, and get rolling.
The official Combat Patrol rules, missions, and faction Combat Patrol PDFs all live on Warhammer Community, and the links below make it way easier to find what you actually need.
To keep every box on roughly the same playing field, special datasheets are used for each faction. So no, you are not just pulling your regular 40k datasheets and calling it a day.
Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol Rules
If you end up playing games of Combat Patrol, remember you will be using different datasheets than in full-size games. That means some weapons, abilities, and unit behavior can feel a little different from what you are used to seeing in standard 40k.
What’s Different in Combat Patrol? (Quick Rules Summary)
- No list-building. You use a pre-set Combat Patrol roster.
- The standard battlefield size is 44” x 30”.
- Missions use Combat Patrol-specific rules and structure.
- Each Combat Patrol gets its own secondaries, enhancements, and stratagems tuned for balance at this game size.
- You download the rules for each faction separately, and those rules are not the same as the normal index card version.
Each Combat Patrol details exactly which units you can take and what equipment to give them, so you can also assemble them from your own existing collection. Each one has a set Warlord and, as in regular games of Warhammer 40,000, they can be given an Enhancement – although this time you have just two to choose from, which can significantly change your strategy.
Combat Patrol is basically GW’s way of giving every box its own trimmed-down rule packet so games stay quick, playable, and a lot less lopsided than just tossing random starter forces at each other.
Example Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol Rules
Here’s what a Combat Patrol PDF actually looks like, so you know what you are downloading before you go clicking through twenty different tabs.
First, they show exactly what comes in the box and what each unit is supposed to be armed with. That makes it pretty easy to match up what you own with what the Combat Patrol format expects.
All of the army and detachment rules you need for Combat Patrol games are right there, but each faction only gets a smaller rules package with a handful of scoring options and a couple of stratagems instead of the full-fat version.
Last but not least, the datasheets usually have small changes baked in to help keep the format balanced between the different boxes. That is the whole point here. Pick up a box, download the PDF, and actually play without needing a full army-building dissertation first.
Tip: Use your browser’s find feature (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F) and type your faction name.
Free 10th Edition 40k Combat Patrol Missions & Rules Downloads
Combat Patrol missions are where this format actually starts to make sense. Smaller board, faster games, less dead time, and enough mission variety that it does not feel like you are just replaying the same starter set slugfest over and over.
How to Use Combat Patrol Missions (3 Steps)
- Download the missions and your faction’s Combat Patrol PDF.
- Set up a 44” x 30” battlefield with terrain.
- Follow the mission map and special rules, and remember that many Combat Patrol missions key off Battleline units securing objectives.
Once you’ve downloaded them, all you need to play is a Combat Patrol for each player, a 44” x 30” battlefield – that’s a pair of gaming boards laid side-by-side – and a little stack of terrain to give your Patrols some cover to fight around.
The Combat Patrol mission rules are pretty close to bigger games of Warhammer 40k, but the smaller board changes the whole rhythm. In many Combat Patrol missions, objectives are secured through Battleline units at the end of the Command phase, which means positioning matters early, and mistakes get punished a lot faster.
Now let’s look at some of the missions for playing Warhammer 40,000 Combat Patrol.
This is a pretty classic setup with all the objectives sitting out in no man’s land, so you have to get stuck in if you want to score instead of hiding in your corner pretending this will sort itself out.
With the smaller battlefield, you do not get much room to breathe, and this one adds another wrinkle by making objective markers disappear. So yes, you still have to pay attention to the secondary stuff instead of just shoving everything to mid-board and hoping for the best.
This mission rule is sneaky strong. If you can deep strike into the backfield and steal that objective marker, your opponent loses those re-rolls and suddenly their plan gets a lot shakier.
This is basically an alpha strike mission. You can move up fast and start razing objectives for a pile of points, but your opponent cannot just walk over later and claim them back.
Getting Command Points for free is always nice, so controlling that home objective is not exactly optional unless you enjoy making life harder than it needs to be.
Last but not least, this mission is all about getting your characters to objectives and keeping your Warlord in the right place. If these look like your kind of scrap, you can download the free Combat Patrol PDF from Games Workshop below.
