The Emperor of Mankind created the Adeptus Custodes during the earliest days of the Great Crusade. As the Imperial Fists Primarch, Rogal Dorn, watched over the Imperium’s territories, the Adeptus Custodes were responsible for guarding the Emperor himself and the Imperial Palace on Terra.
Their genetic template was based on the Emperor’s own DNA, imbuing them with superhuman abilities and unmatched combat prowess. Each Custodian is handpicked and subjected to intense training, making them some of the most skilled and disciplined warriors in the galaxy.
Unlike other Space Marine Chapters, the Adeptus Custodes’ numbers are relatively small, with only a few thousand warriors in existence. This is due to their primary purpose of safeguarding the Emperor and the Imperial Palace.

After the Heresy, they withdrew to the Imperial Palace, rarely venturing into the galaxy. However, they continued to keep a watchful eye on the threats that emerged from within and beyond the Imperium.
In the current events of the 41st millennium, the Adeptus Custodes have become more active outside the palace walls, venturing into the galaxy to thwart potential threats to the Emperor and the Imperium. Their presence and intervention are often a mystery, with many unaware of their existence.

Notable Custodian leaders include Constantin Valdor, the Chief Custodian, and Captain-General Trajann Valoris, the current leader. Captain-General Jenetia Krole also holds a significant position as the first female Captain-General.
