The Land Raider got some new variants rules in 8th edition. Let’s take a look at the Land Raider Excelsior and the Prometheus, to see what they’re all about.
Land Raiders are a healthy backbone unit to any Space Marine army. at T8, 16 wounds, and a 2+ Sv. it may stick around a while.
The Imperium’s got some alternate models above and beyond the Crusader and stock land raider kit that you may have never seen played.
Land Raider Excelsior
This puppy sits in at 428 pts base and comes with quad Las cannons and a Grav cannon with Grav amp for weapons. It’s got the exact same stat line as a normal Land Raider.
The rules are what makes it different. It has Rite of Battle which lets everyone within 6″ reroll hit rolls of 1 (Same as Captain ability, except the Land Raider has a bigger bubble)
It also had the Data Augurs rule that lets it add 1 to the hit rolls if it’s within 24″ of a Rhino Primaris. This basically turns into a nasty T8 captain that you can run down the field with everyone else in your army while the Rhino Primaris sits in the back.
The Rhino Primaris and Land Raider Excelsior are the Wombo Combo. The great thing this Land Raider has is an invulnerable save! But it’s only a 5++. With a 2+ Sv, most las cannons are gonna push it to a 5+ armor save anyway. There is some -4 and -5 AP are out there but it’s very rare.
Land Raider Prometheus
The Land Raider Prometheus could be a good choice for the Inquisition. It lacks decent anti-tank weaponry but has 8 Heavy Bolters and enemy units don’t get the benefit of cover saves against it. The real reason why you take one of these things may be to put your warlord is inside. Because then all your stratagems costs are reduced by 1 to a minimum of 1.
Inquisition has never really been a faction that you take as your entire army. But it makes for a nice fluffy auxiliary choice for your other guys. This Land Raider sits in at 362 points so it’s not the cheapest thing out there for sure. Here’s look at you, Knight Gallant.
40k Units You’ve Never Played: LR Excelsior & Prometheus
All in all, Lander Raiders have been getting more attention but not many people are branching out past the Quad Las cannon/Crusader models. Give these a try the next time you play a pick-up game. You may actually like it. They aren’t the most competitive thing but being able to take a Land Raider as an HQ is pretty cool.
