Two more off-meta 40k army lists emerged in the 2021 Free State GT Tournament, check these ones out!
9th Edition’s meta is still settling, but some players are taking lists with units that nobody was expecting. Check out these awesome homebrew lists that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. They didn’t do too bad and just goes to show that sometimes it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.
Top Homebrew 40k Army List: 2021 Free State GT

2021 Free State GT: Stewart Reed- Drukhari
Stewart chose to play Dark Eldar with the first detachment led by a Haemonculus who provides a cheap HQ that also helps make some of the rest of the list hardier by giving them +1 Toughness. Troops see 29 Wracks to help benefit from that +1 Toughness aura. Heavy Support sees 3 Talos with melee options to hopefully get into the lines and tear up 2 wound models like space marines.
The second detachment is a simple Succubus and Wyches duo. The Succubus allows the Wyches to reroll hits of one while the Wyches can focus on swinging up against some other troops for a low investment.
The final detachment is led by an Archon who gives rerolls to the detachments’ Kabalite Warriors. For Elites, the Sslyths help support the Archon to keep them on the field as long as possible.

Fast Attacks, 10 Scourges offer cheap models with a ton of shredder shots and the bonus of their poison makes wounding easier on tough targets. Fliers see the addition of two Voidraven Bombers for some antiarmor ranged options while being hard to deal with and supersonic. Finally, 3 Raiders help protect some of the troop’s options while the fliers and Talos can get in there and deal as much damage as possible before being destroyed.
2021 Free State GT: Aaron Cook- Adeptus Custodes
Aaron went for a single detachment, lead by a Shield captain on foot, plus one on a Dawneagle Jetbike. Both extremely durable, but they also give you rerolls of 1 to nearby troops- not just core (for now). The Jetbike gets access to some high damage rounds and a huge boost to mobility. There is also a single Culexus and Prosecutors for some bonus support to the army’s Achilles heel- Psychics.
Troops bring three squads of three Sagittarum Custodians that have decent melee and shooting, giving a flexible unit,
Elites bring in an Allarus Terminators squad running Axes for the bonus potential in melee being able to take on some other faction elite melee fighters.
Fast attacks include two Grav-Attack tanks that bring great weapons considering their low point investment. While Venatari has jump packs, giving the list some extra mobility for capping objectives and taking out easy, lone targets. They also have the option of setting up in reserves too which is nice flexibility for their points.
Finishing out the list is a Telemon Heavy Dreadnought with an Illiatus for long-range anti-armor support while being able to move around and protect themselves with their Caestus.
Overall these lists offer a little bit of a different approach but we like it because of their all-in on an aspect of their faction in a response to the meta.
Even better they got great results from the player who piloted it! It’s also very encouraging when a player is able to play a widely considered “underpowered” army or list style so effectively.
