The new 40k Tau Codex has been spotted and the rules are flying like crazy- here’s what are supposedly the new wargear and weapons rules!
Someone got their hands on the codex book a little early it looks like, and has answered/transcribed a ton of rules across a thread and throughout multiple messages. More importantly, they posted a picture of their cat with the Codex book, so in theory, these are not new Tau rules rumors but rules leaks instead…
New Tau 9th Edition Codex
It’s about to get even better with Codex: T’au Empire on the way early next year. How early? We’ll get to that, but it’s close enough that we’ve been able to get some markerlights trained on the cover so you can see the beautiful art right now. Codex: T’au Empire will arrive in early 2022, and with the Genestealer Cults and Adeptus Custodes codexes also landing in the same period.
We’ll see how they do the release, but we expect those other two codex books (Custodes & GSC) will come out a little earlier, and then the Tau stuff with Darkstrider, etc. Still, with how strange the releases have been, we’ll have to see.
So we’re on deck to see the new Tau codex soon as we are “in the same period” as the other two mentioned above!
New Tau Codex Wargear & Weapons 9th Edition 40k Rules Spotted!
Spotted on a wild thread over on Reddit, we have what may be a ton of new Tau 40k rules “rumors”.
Hi there. Picture should prove my credentials. I promised not to give out more pictures, so I won’t. On the same front, I promise not to lie or embellish anything and to keep my personal commentary to an absolute minimum on any information I pass along.
Plasma Rifle is Assault 1, S8, AP-4, Dmg 3.
Broadside Rail Gun is Heavy 2 S9, AP -4, d3+3 damage, 1 auto MW on a successful wound.
Seeker Missile: 72″, Heavy 1, S9, AP -3, Dmg 2d3, one shot per seeker.
Sky Rays have a Seeker Missile Rack – 72″, Heavy d3+1, S9, AP-3, 2d3 dmg
Vespid Neutron Blasters are 18″ Assault 2, S5, AP-3, D2
Counterfire Defense System – Get the keyword to use the strat. Mercifully, does not cost points
EWO – 5+ Overwatch for this model. The Overwatch Stratagem costs 1 less CP when used for this unit. Also free. Probably need to have at least one of these per Crisis team.
Iridium – 2+ save, 1 per 3 models, 10 points, does not take up a support slot!
Multi-tracker – 6s to hit score an additional hit for ranged attacks targeting units containing 6 or more models. Free as a bird.

Shield Generator – 4++, 5pts for Crisis, 10 pts for Commanders, built into Stormsurges and Riptides! Ghostkeel cannot have.
Target Lock – This model Ignores Light Cover
Velocity Tracker – Ranged attacks gain +1 to hit when targeting units with the Fly keyword
Tau Empire 9th Edition 40k Prototype System Rules
Prototype Systems are a sort of trait system that helps to buff up important battlesuits in a Tau list. That being said these aren’t free and do cost points to add, so only the best options should be seriously considered if you are short on points.
On the first page, there are 4 options with one of the best being the Advanced Burst Cannon. Burst cannons are already a fantastic option for Tau lists, but upgrading one even further for 15 pts seems fair when you consider the buffed stats and the ability to prevent and wound loss negation abilities.
The second page has much more options, meaning there are more good things to consider too! Internal Grenade Racks is a decent choice, providing some mortal wounds (d3) output every turn on a 2+. Stim Injectors is another great option allowing you to get a 50-50 FNP on an important life or death turn where you really need one more turn out of the model.
So far the new updates to infantry and battlesuits seem to be just what the doctor ordered for the Tau rules-wise in 9th edition!
