GW Announces New Space Marine Heroes (but there’s a catch)

space marine wal hor wideGW just announced a new set of six Space Marine Heroes, but there is a giant catch; we’ve seen these before…

While having new minis is always cool, GW is recycling the old Ultramarines set this time. However, if you did miss out on them the last time around in 2018, now you have a second chance.

If you’ve never seen the Space Marine Heroes sets, they are basically booster packs that come with a random mini inside, and if you buy a full booster pack, you’re guaranteed to get all 6 of the “new” models.

Warhammer Community unveiled the details of the set and how to grab yours. Let’s check out the details, then compare them to the last set of Ultramarines heroes.

GW Announces New Space Marine Heroes for 2022 (but there’s a catch)

Space Marine heroes 6

If you aren’t familiar with blind boxes, they’re simple. There are six sculpts of Space Marine Heroes – this time in the form of Blood Angels – packaged into mystery boxes you can pick up at a variety of stores or online. Each box gives you a chance of getting any one of the six – or if you buy the whole dispensary, you’ll be guaranteed to get one of each, plus two duplicates for a total of eight miniatures!

The packs are pretty cool but fairly expensive for what you get. As an $8 Firstborn mini really isn’t too exciting, but it is fun to open the pack not sure of what you’re going to get, and they are special sculpts. So might be worth it as far as that goes… Plus, you get the card and a textured base.

You’ll be able to order these red rogues from selected outlets from the 30th of July, and then from the Games Workshop webstore and Warhammer stores from the 1st of October. Each box will cost £5 and a full dispensary pack of eight will be £40 – see below for the equivalent in your territory.

Many times these go to big box stores and might be a decent way to get new people into the game. As they grab one mini and might get hooked (maybe). It might be easier for current players to wait until they hit the webstore.

With all that, GW isn’t even trying to hide the fact these are the same minis from before, just in red plastic instead of blue.

Reused Minis

Space Marines 12 Heroes Collect

These Space Marine Heroes are push-fit miniatures in red plastic, stood atop a textured rubble base. They’re armed with a mix of weapons – from classic bolters to brutal heavy weapons – and each can be built with your choice of a bare head or helmet. You might have seen these models before in Ultramarine blue, but they’re now firmly on the side of Sanguinius.

The last time there were 12 of them, GW even says they are reusing them, but considering these came out in 2017/2018, maybe there are a lot of people in the hobby now who never saw them…Ultramarines HeroesLet’s compare the old ones to the new ones and see if anything is different.

Space Marine heroes 2Well, as you can see, nothing is different, and there isn’t even any Blood Angels iconography on the models. Well, other than the decals the painting team threw on. So while they are red plastic, they are identical to the set put out basically five years ago… Oh well, if you want them, they’ll be up for sale soon.
