Infinity N5: Hyperthermal brings Spec-Ops back with new models and a real spot in competitive ITS play as an extra Fireteam Haris.
For longtime Infinity players, just getting Spec-Ops back as custom narrative characters would’ve been pretty cool. But Corvus Belli seems to have heard the concerns, because now there’s a reason to actually bring these three boxes in your army list.
They’re coming with Hyperthermal, the new N5 expansion that’s up for preorder now. PanOceania, Yu Jing, and the Combined Army get the first bundles, and each comes with a preorder-exclusive mercenary, Rumbler.
So, the question is, what are you getting in each one?
Hyperthermal Is a Story Book, Not Just Another Rulebook
- Spec-Ops in ITS: The Medium Infantry, Heavy Infantry and SpecBot can deploy together as an additional Fireteam Haris, with special bonuses and the option to activate an Armed Turret.
- €98 bundles: Each PanOceania, Yu Jing and Combined Army bundle pairs the Hyperthermal book with a Spec-Ops box, and the only saving is a free €22.50 Rumbler.
- Six more factions: More Spec-Ops land on November 27 and December 18, and Corvus Belli plans to repeat the Rumbler offer with them.
Every qualifying purchase from this article helps Spikey Bits keep the lights on and the fun going. All prices are accurate as of publishing time.
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to buy Hyperthermal just to get the rules. It’s a 239-page, full-color hardcover (€58, available in English and Spanish) that’s mainly about the lore and campaign. Corvus Belli still gives away the main N5 gameplay rules digitally, so you’re covered there.
The story picks up after Operation Mazebreaker and Monday Signal, with the fight over Shinju’s alien resources getting even nastier. That’s something we’ve always liked about Infinity. There’s an actual reason these factions are fighting, instead of everyone just showing up because those are the models they brought.
Haqqislam and ALEPH also get some more background after not getting as much attention in the original N5 book. Plus, it adds more on OperationS, Corregidor, Imperial Service, and Next Wave, plus a whole chapter on Spec-Ops and an official narrative campaign. Throw in painting guides, miniature photography and artwork, and there’s quite a bit to dig through.
Each Spec-Ops Bundle Comes With Swappable Weapon Arms
Each €98 bundle comes with a Medium Infantry, a Heavy Infantry and a SpecBot, plus the Hyperthermal book and Rumbler. The infantry also have interchangeable weapon arms, which is always nice. You’re not stuck with whatever weapon the model came holding, and you can swap the loadout around.
PanOceania: Indigo Spec-Ops Bundle: €98
PanOceania’s high-tech military gets a darker look with the Indigo covert-ops team. Both the Medium and Heavy Infantry come with HMG and MULTI Rifle arms, and you get a Blueberry SpecBot along with them.
Yu Jing: Gui Feng Spec-Ops Bundle: €98
Yu Jing’s Gui Feng fit right in with the faction’s more ruthless covert-ops side. You’ve got a MULTI Sniper Rifle, an HMG, and alternative MULTI Rifle arms, with a Men Tong SpecBot backing them up. A sniper and a heavy-weapons build sounds about right for an elite Spec-Ops team.
Combined Army: Nexus-7 Spec-Ops Bundle: €98
The Combined Army gets its own modular specialists, with plenty of alien tech and firepower. The Nexus-7 Medium and Heavy Infantry can use a MULTI Rifle, Breaker Pistol, Heavy Rocket Launcher, or HMG, and the Voldron 401 SpecBot rounds out the team. We’d probably go straight for that Heavy Rocket Launcher and HMG pairing when building this one.
Spec-Ops Finally Earn a Spot in Competitive ITS Games
This might actually be the part we’re most interested in, even more than the new book. In ITS games, your Medium Infantry, Heavy Infantry, and SpecBot can deploy together as an additional Fireteam Haris. They get special bonuses, and you can activate an Armed Turret as well.
For casual games, you can mess around with your operative a bit more. You customize a Medium Infantry Spec-Ops and then evolve it into Heavy Infantry during the battle, picking up extra benefits or deploying its accompanying remote instead. Having your operative grow as the game goes on? That could be a lot of fun in a narrative game.
And you can already check out how it works. Corvus Belli updated the Spec-Ops rules and profiles in Infinity Army on September 1, ahead of the miniatures coming out.
The Real Discount is a Free Rumbler
So, are you actually saving anything with these bundles? Well, the book and faction box aren’t discounted. Hyperthermal is €58 on its own, a Spec-Ops box is €40, and Rumbler normally costs €22.50. Buy all three separately, and you’re at €120.50. Basically, the whole discount is that you’re getting Rumbler for free.
You might’ve expected a little more from something called a “bundle”, but hey, if you already wanted the book and your faction’s models, a free €22.50 elite mercenary isn’t bad, though. Plus, the Rumbler’s background connects back to Paradiso, and Corvus Belli says the exclusive runs until January 29, 2027, or while supplies last.
Six More Factions Are Next in Line for Spec-Ops
What if you don’t play one of those first three factions? Well, Ariadna Intel, Nomads Vortex, and ALEPH Chandra are coming on November 27. Then Haqqislam Husam, O-12 Stormo, and JSA Kaizoku arrive on December 18. Corvus Belli plans to offer the same Hyperthermal bundle deal with those releases, so those players should get their chance at Rumbler too.
If your army’s coming in one of those later waves, we’d probably just wait. No real reason to buy a box for a faction you don’t play just to grab the mercenary.
Final Thoughts on the Infinity N5 Spec-Ops Return
We’re pretty curious to see how those Fireteam Haris bonuses play out once people start putting Spec-Ops on the table in ITS games. It’ll also be interesting to see whether the next two waves give the other factions’ Spec-Ops the same treatment.
