Dan Abnett reveals one 40k writing secret to rule them all while previewing more of the Dark Tide (think 40k Vermintide port) video game.
The new game will focus on what it is like to be a human fending off all manner of enemies in the far future. If you played Vermintide, this is much of the same, of course with it set in 40k and the Grimdark! Sci-fi is much different than fantasy, but it looks to be similar gameplay-wise.
There is a certain vulnerability of being human and fighting in the far future. They really wanted to work that aspect into the game and almost give it a horror-survival feel. In a recent video, Dan Abnett gave his thoughts on the story aspect, being a human in the future in general, and what we can expect.

Dan Abnett Reveals the Secret to Writing 40k Fiction & Darktide
The thing Dan has continued writing through his career is Gaunt’s Ghosts. Why? He thinks the human aspect is the most interesting. Sure there’s crazy Space Marines, aliens, and Chaos Gods, but the human aspect can’t be underestimated. So, that’s the direction he went with the game’s story.
The game takes place on a planet called Atoma Prime and focuses on a single hive city that is the size of a continent. You can’t get much more Grimdark than a hive city, or have your characters feel any smaller!
The city is vital to the Imperium because of its size and wealth of souls. Obviously, that also makes it the perfect place for Chaos to infiltrate. The main character starts as a prisoner but eventually starts working for the Inquisition. Dan really liked working on this project, because he’s written for decades about 40k, but now you get to interact with the story instead of just reading it.
