FLG has sold a basic tape measure for a while, and the MSR PRO is the upgraded version for people who actually care about the experience on the table. Most of that upgrade comes from the locking mechanism and overall construction.
Whether it’s worth thirty bucks depends on how often your current tape irritates you, and perhaps how many lesser-quality tape measures you have broken in the past too.
A Well-Made Tape is Worth It
Sure, you can grab a tape measure at the hardware store for eight bucks, and it’ll tell you what 9″ looks like perfectly well. The annoying part is actually using the tape on a tabletop.
Most regular tapes want to retract the second you loosen your grip, so you wind up holding the tape down with a thumb while trying to move a model around it. The MSR PRO stays where you stop pulling. Your measuring hand can let go while your other hand deals with the miniature.

What’s going to be more interesting is whether gaming tape measures keep going the same way as dice trays, movement tools, and all the other stuff that used to be whatever you had lying around. Once enough players decide they want a nicer version, somebody starts building one specifically for the tabletop.
If players are willing to spend $29.99 to make one of the most boring parts of a game less annoying, there are probably plenty more little table-level problems waiting for the same treatment.
