Games Workshop put out free PDF army books for the legacy factions in Warhammer: The Old World, and each one gives you a Grand Army list to field the models you already own. These aren’t built for matched play and GW won’t be updating them alongside future Old World releases, so treat them as the way to keep your older armies on the table in casual games.

Here is the latest on the free Warhammer The Old World rules for Legacy Factions.
The rules contained within this document allow players the opportunity to try out the Warhammer: The Old World rules using models they may have in their collection. They are not intended for use in matched play events and will not be updated in line with any future Warhammer: the Old World publications.
Either way, the PDFs are free and ready to download, so let’s run through what each faction actually gets.
Warhammer The Old World FAQ
There’s plenty more to come from the World of Legend. If you have rules questions, you can email the Warhammer: The Old World team at old-world FAQ @gwplc.com. They won’t respond directly, but your questions will inform what they hope will become a biannual FAQ/errata update. There’s even an initial list of clarifications available here.
The FAQ runs four pages of clarifications and errata, and it’s worth skimming before your first game so a keyword argument doesn’t stall the table. You can grab it from GW’s official Old World downloads page.
Lizardmen Warhammer the Old World Rules
Lizardmen are still a headline army in AoS, which is probably why they landed in legacy instead of full Old World support. The PDF gives you a Grand Army list, so a shelf of square-based lizards is back on the table for free.
Dark Elves Rules
Dark Elves have been a fantasy staple forever, so this one’s really for the returning players and collectors who never stripped the paint off their old Druchii. The legacy PDF keeps them playable even though they didn’t make the cut as a supported army.
Vampire Counts Rules
Tomb Kings hold the undead spot in the supported Old World lineup, which leaves Vampire Counts in legacy. Use the PDF to put a friendly list together and get your old undead back on the table.
Ogre Kingdoms Rules
Some Ogre Kingdoms models still show up on square bases in GW’s own photos, yet the faction only gets legacy rules for now. If you’re pulling old Ogres out of storage, check the base sizes against your group’s setup before the first game, since square-to-round basing is the usual thing that trips people up here.
Skaven Old World Legacy Factions Rules
Skaven feel like the odd one out here, as fantasy a horde army as you’ll find but stuck with a legacy list instead of full support. The PDF still hands you a Grand Army list, so a big rat swarm plays fine in casual games, it just won’t see the ongoing updates the supported armies get.
Daemons of Chaos Rules
Daemons cross over between game systems, so plenty of hobbyists already have a pile of them built. The legacy PDF gives that collection a Grand Army list for Old World, which is an easy way to get them onto a fantasy table without buying anything new.
Chaos Dwarfs Rules
Chaos Dwarfs round out the list, and the PDF gives your old models a Grand Army list to run in Old World. Just remember these are legacy rules, so they’re built for casual games and won’t be updated alongside the supported factions.
