GW’s Kill Team Elites Reveal: Is This Just Small-Point 40k Now?

GW just revealed the lineup of rules in the Kill Team Elites expansion and after seeing some of the units inside, where is the game headed now?

When Warhammer Community teased the contents page, they showed off some units we never expected to see in Kill Team when the game was reintroduced on the tabletop. Could this all be another step towards small 40k games?

We won’t be going over all of the unit options in the book but take a look at just a few that stood out to us. Tau are able to take Crisis suits, Custodes have access to Shield Captains, Chaos can bring along Greater Possessed and even Masters of Possessions.

When we first saw Kill Team hit the tables it seems a lot of hobbyists assumed that it would stay tame by only (mainly) allowing Troops choices. Sure, there were a few elite options here and there but our ears perked up when they announced HQ options like the Patriarch coming to the game. A few months later and now we’ve got Elites galore. If things keep heading the way they are, next we may just see heavy supports and flyers join along.

At that point, what would be different about Kill Team and a small 500 pt game of 40k?

We aren’t by any means trying to say that Elites dropping into Kill Team are going to ruin the game. However, at what point does this “specialist game” become just another 40k tabletop clone? Perhaps there will be restrictions on it similar to Commander that balance things. So at the end of the day, while Elites games may just be apples to apples, if you mix all three (KT, KT: Commanders and KT: Elites) it starts to look eerily similar to 40k.

What do you think about Elites coming to Kill Team? What unit are you most excited to use? Have you played in large games of Kill Team where HQs were allowed? What’s been your experience? Let us know in the comments of our Facebook Hobby Group.
