In my Magnus showcase, I mentioned dusting off the ol’ portable photo studio. I didn’t go into many details then, saving that sweet content and review for a later time. Well, the time is now, folks!
The truth of the matter is, I’ve had this thing for ages, I just never got around to using it. I bought it online when I was drunk five years ago and was frustrated with my picture taking skills. Arguably, being drunk didn’t help those, but that’s a whole other bag.
Fast forward a couple of weeks back, I’m struggling to take decent quality pictures of the Magnus diorama. With the weird angles and large areas of the piece, it was a nightmare.
So I dug up the portable photo station from the storage of the store, and lo and behold, decent pictures! Here is a couple side by side pictures of roughly the same angle with and without the studio:
Now believe me when I say decent pictures. Photography is not something I really enjoy, so I don’t spend much time on it or put much effort in learning how to step up my pic game. This is why I enjoy the portable studio thing so much: it requires practically no effort and it increases the quality of pictures you can take.
I mean damn, Harry Potter ain’t got nothin’ on this guy! Here’s the link for the USA folks ( Canucks, I got you hooked up with a sweet deal on the Canadian Amazon, just scroll to the end of this post. Leave no hoser behind! )

I will probably upload a video soon enough about the exact contents and how I use the portable studio; in the meantime, here’s what I find quite useful:
- Foldable, so you can keep it stowed away and it doesn’t use much space at all
- A white and a black backdrop, so you can pick the one that looks best with your minis
- If you have enough lighting, you can just use the box, no need to set up the extra lights
Like a lot of things on here, the portable doodad combines minimum effort for maximum results, and it makes it a hobby must have if you intend to show off your stuff on the internet. Phrasing?
For those shopping from the motherland ( Canada, obv ) here’s the link I promised:
