Varanguard Lore: Archaon’s champions

They are legion, thousands of mighty warriors chosen by the Dark Gods and handpicked by the Everchosen himself. The Varanguard, the menace of the Mortal Realms. Each a veteran of countless campaigns and battles in the name of Chaos, and with the body count to match. Bloodshed, cruelty and conquest are their nature. Kings, warlords, daemons and mighty warriors respect and fear them. For they only answer to Archaon The Everchosen himself. They ride to war on his command to slaughter and enslave. Picked from all warriors of Chaos, they’re a mix of all kinds of fighters. Bloodfueled berserkers, disease-ridden husks, pleasure-driven knights and deceiving soldiers are all welcome to serve the Everchosen.

Each warrior who was chosen to join the ranks of the Varanguard go on a long and hard pilgrimage, calling themselves a Black Pilgrim. Each is given eight tasks and trials before them to show their skills and prove themselves worthy. They are unique for every Black Pilgrim but equally hard and tormenting, a large number don’t live to tell the tale. Should they survive all trials, they will be brought before the Everchosen who casts down his final verdict. Afterwards, they are placed in one of eight circles of the Varanguard. Only a fraction of the Varanguard is handpicked to serve the first circle, the Swords of Chaos, who accompanies Archaon to battle.

When the Varanguard ride to battle, any opposing army will tremble in their boots. Riding atop of cursed and warped steeds and wielding hellish weapons of all kinds they charge with unrelenting rage. They carve a bloody path through enemy lines to make way for Archaon and his ambitions. They take pride in their many skills, adorning their steeds with trophies and presenting any beheaded warlord to Archaon. Hoping to get his favour.

ON THE FIELD

On the Tabletop of the Mortal Realms, the Varanguard are a Battleline choice for any Slaves to Darkness army. They are the most expensive Battleline option for that army when it comes to points, coming in at 280 points. But they are worth the investment, they hit hard and are able to withstand a lot of damage. Their steeds, weapons, and armour make them as powerful as a lot of melee-oriented Heroes in other armies. Any Slaves to Darkness army will benefit from having these champions massacre their foe.

The Varanguard wield weapons and gear fit for kings, one of the most important being their Warpsteel Shields. These Hellforged shields cast off the effects of Spells and Endless Spells at a roll of 5+. When it comes to their other gear, they have three equally terrifying choices. Ensorceled Weapons are all kinds of powerful personal weapons that deal double the attacks of other weapons. Fellspears on the other hand have longer range and deal 2 damage, stabbing through both armour and hide. Finally, they can wield Daemonforged Blades, which deal D3 damage. All-powerful weapons for Archaon’s chosen warriors.

Thier Mutated Steeds also bite and tear away at their foe with their own Tearing Fangs. Furthermore, their Daemonforged Blades deal an additional Mortal Wound on every Hit roll of six. Should they have a Fellspear instead, they add an additional one to their Wound rolls and Rends when they charge that turn. The Varanguard are Archaon’s right hand, and their rules reflect that. Should the Everchosen be in your army, his influence adds one to the Hit roll of any Varanguard melee weapon

The Everchosen’s own handpicked warriors will make any foe tremble beneath their trampling hooves and hellish weapons.
