What may be the biggest GW fail ever, Finecast quietly turned 10 this year back in May. Love it or hate it let’s look back on this polarizing period in model making.
Ah, Finecast, the product that no one really wanted but everyone received. When this was released back in May of 2011, the community had, shall we say, mixed reviews. Some people never had an issue with it, others we’ll say disliked it (very strongly).
So, why did GW switch to this material? Supposedly the prices of their metals were rising and they didn’t have the capacity to switch everything over to plastic quite yet. That means Finecast was the perfect stop-gap material, or a tactical bandaid if you will.
Plus, with how it worked, the rumor is Games Workshop was able to just take their pewter molds and switch them to Finecast on the fly (at least at first). So Finecast was never meant to be a long-term solution, but it still rears its ugly head for older units (we’re looking at you Dark Eldar).
Let’s take a look back at how it all went down way back in 2011.

Well, pretty much every faction got something back in the day! There are still a bunch of Finecast models still floating around the range, so if you are feeling nostalgic, don’t worry, you can still get them!
Why They Started Using it & Phasing it Out
As we said before, this was always rumored as a stopgap-type solution. The rising cost of metals forced them to change, however, it would take years to get the plastic molds ready.
We actually have a pretty good timeline for how long it took them to get the plastic injection molding and tooling ready. They started producing single plastic character units in late 2013/early 2014.
So in those 2-3 years, they just seem to port over all the pewter molds to Finecast while waiting for plastic ones to come to fruition. This seemed to be all based on profits because they couldn’t raise prices enough, or cut enough costs with metal. The actual runs of Finecast were very small as they started switching over to plastic right away.
It almost seems like even GW wanted it gone ASAP.
Obviously, the community was not happy because there were so many issues. If you ever used the Liquid Green Stuff above, you know what we’re talking about. You would put it into cracks and then it would just shrink up into basically nothing.
The release of Finecast seemed to indicate that even GW knew there were going to be problems. With offerings of Emery Boards, Liquid Green Stuff, and even the “clean up kit” below, it just shows how many issues this material had, and that there would be significant work required to prepare models for painting.
Let’s be real here, when you have to buy a cleanup kit for your models, you know things are bad. Luckily, GW phased it out quickly for the majority of (new) models in about 2-3 years, but some factions still have close to half their units in Finecast ten years later…
The Last Model Made in Finecast?
Severina Raine was made in 2019 and it was actually Finecast! It was a limited edition mini but still, it was wild to grab a Finecast mini made in 2019 (8 years after the introduction of the material). So there’s a chance it’s not gone forever.
Let’s hope 2019 marks the last year GW makes a new Finecast model! Either way, it was never meant to be a long-term solution but is still in use over ten years later.
