GW Warhammer 40k App Army Builder for 10th Edition

warhammer-40k-10th-Edition-app-army-builder-battlescribeGW paywalled their 10th Edition Warhammer 40k army builder app with a Warhammer + subscription.

To be fair, they never said it would be free for a long time, but this is faster than many people expected. Luckily this time, parts of the app will remain free whether you pay or not, meaning you should be able to still see the rules.

Fortunately, other 3rd party army builders have made a lot of headway for their 10th Edition apps, and you can see the list of alternatives here!

Let’s jump into the announcement from GW.

GW Paywalls Their Warhammer 40k Army Builder: (July 28th, 2023)

The Games Workshop Army Builder App Paywall announcement comes from Warhammer Community.

The Battle Forge tool really helps you to plan army lists quickly and easily, and share them for printing or reference. That element of the App is currently free, but it will only remain so until the end of August.

From the 30th of August, you’ll need to subscribe to Warhammer+ in order to access the full features of Battle Forge. The other tools in the app will remain free, and it will continue as an excellent reference for the most up-to-date rules for Warhammer 40,000. The Index datasheets, Combat Patrol rules, and Core Rules references will remain accessible even without a subscription.

We thought they might slowly turn this into a paid subscription, such as, when an army gets a codex, then you have to pay for that.

However, that’s not the case, and you will have to pay for the army builder portion of it starting in August. The other big change from the last edition, there is no option to just get the app on its own, you have to subscribe to Warhammer +, and judging by comments online people have quite mixed opinions about it.

Either way, the good news is the rules will remain free (but we’re assuming only until that faction’s codex comes out).

GW Updated 10th Edition App With Forge World Units & Fixed Allies: (June, 27th 2023)

Warhammer 40k App Army Builder for 10th EditionThese new updates bodes well for the rest of the edition, as they have the capability to make changes relatively quickly and aren’t sitting around too long. Plus, with the app still free (at the time of writing this), it’s nice to at least be able to make some lists without paying.

Maybe the best part about the app, for right now, is that all the datasheets will be updated here. This is huge because we all know there will be tons of changes to the datasheets and rules at the start of a new edition, so just having them continuously updated and you don’t have to search around for the newest datasheets.

10th Edition App Updated with forge worldWhile the pictures are all still stock photos (for the Forge World units), they have the points and rules in the list! It’s just good to see them keeping up with the app, as they also fixed the issues with some factions, like the Imperial Knights being able to add Imperial allies (how many points you can take of what) and some other bug fixes.

If you’ve tried the builder, it does allow you to make a list quite quickly, shows the errors in your list, and has some nice hyperlinks for reference. However, there are still some little annoying things, like when you add more models to a unit; you also have to go in and update stock weapons.

Either way, it looks like they laid this out better than 9th, and GW will keep it updated better than the previous one. Plus, with Forge World units in there, this should have every unit you can pick for your army!

Free GW Warhammer 40k App Army Builder for 10th Edition Download: (June 21st, 2023)

The latest on the free Warhammer 40k 10th Edition Army Builder App download comes from Warhammer Community.

Warhammer 40k App Army Builder for 10th Edition

This app is designed to work hand-in-hand with the new edition of Warhammer 40,000, providing an easy-to-use army planner called Battle Forge. This will provide datasheets that are updated as they change, and a quick rules reference section.

Battle Forge lets you create armies for three game sizes: Incursion, Strike Force, and Onslaught (1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 points respectively). Although it’s now easier than ever to put together an army, Battle Forge will automatically flag any mistakes you’ve made such as incorrect loadouts or choices. You’ll also be able to export your lists to share with your friends or submit to events prior to competing.

Maybe the best part about the app, for right now, is that all the datasheets will be updated here. This is huge because we all know at the start of a new edition, there will be tons of changes to the datasheets and rules, so just having them continuously updated and you don’t have to search around for the newest datasheets.

Also, with only three levels of points, it should be easy for them to program it to get the points correct and show what you’re doing wrong in the list (which, again, seems pretty straightforward.)

Combine this with access to the Core Rules and a quick rule reference that covers key terms, army rules, Enhancements, and Stratagems and you’ve got almost everything you need to play Warhammer 40,000 right there in the palm of your hand. You’ll still need a mission – which can be found in the Core Rules, the Crusade rules, or the Chapter Approved Leviathan Deck.

The app is available for download on iOS and Android, and you can try it for free right now. It will remain free for an initial period so you can plan lists and try it out in your first games of the new edition. The Core Rules element and the Combat Patrol datasheets in the app will remain free, while other elements will eventually become paid features.

Having the core rules and everything inside is quite nice, and getting to try it for free is even better. That way, when GW makes this a paid app, you can decide from your previous experience if it’s worthwhile or not.

They also mentioned that the old app will stick around for a while, so you can still play some games of 9th, but it will be marked as old, so it doesn’t cause confusion.
