The Long War: Episode 524

Show Summary:

This week, the crew talks about the rules, balance, and what will happen with all the models going to Legends in 11th Edition. Here are the key takeaways, section by section:

  • 00:00-04:30: Rob Baer, Kenny Boucher, and Wyatt open The Long War by talking about smaller hobby creators, encouraging people to give lesser-known YouTube channels and Instagram accounts some attention instead of always feeding the biggest names in the algorithm.
  • 04:30-19:45: Wyatt asks whether they’d rather restart life in 1970 with $5,000 or 1900 with $10,000, which turns into Rob planning casino schemes, hobo boxing, robber-baron investments, and his lifelong mission to destroy Long John Silver’s.
  • 19:45-23:30: An old YouTube comment accusing Kenny of cocaine use derails the show, after someone blamed his sweating, teeth grinding, and manic energy on drugs rather than ADHD and painting miniatures on camera.
  • 23:30-35:30: Archon Studio’s StarCraft rollout gets roasted over delayed retail products and messy preorder logistics, while the hosts compare its pricing with Bandai’s much cheaper Gundam Assemble releases.
  • 35:30-40:45: The news desk hits Squad Marks terrain, the new Custodes Support Battle Group, and GW’s latest price increase, with the $230 Custodes box getting praise for moving several expensive Forge World kits into plastic.
  • 40:45-42:30: Target’s Dawn of War board game gets another shoutout at $50, thanks to a full game and a pile of older Space Marine models packed into the box.
  • 42:30-50:30: The new 11th edition Codex format gets discussed after the Orks book starts circulating, with points and other balance-sensitive rules moving to the app so GW can update them without reprinting the book.
  • 50:30-56:30: Rob pumps the brakes on rumors of huge GW reveals at NOVA, LVO, or other conventions, pointing out that Games Workshop has mostly stopped tying preview shows to major events.
  • 56:30-1:07:30: The big Space Marine Legends purge takes over the show, with Predators, Vindicators, Razorbacks, Centurions, aircraft, characters, and other Firstborn units leaving the main Codex.
  • 1:07:30-1:14:30: GW’s new “Legendary Proxies” idea raises some interesting rules questions, especially whether Tactical Marines and Devastators can really proxy cleanly if their classic special and heavy weapons don’t exist on the newer Primaris datasheets.
  • 1:14:30-1:25:00: Kenny’s bigger complaint is how GW delivered the Legends news, promoting the returning Captain on Bike and then dropping the much uglier list of cuts about an hour later before the UK workday ended.
  • 1:25:00-1:33:30: The discussion shifts to whether Legends should really be treated like a graveyard, since casual players can still use the models even if most tournament formats won’t allow them.
  • 1:33:30-1:41:00: The Long War crew seriously considers making Legends part of its own tournament format, with Long War Doubles already allowing some Legends units and 2027 potentially opening the door wider for old collections.
