Blood of the Phoenix is the first Box Set announced for Psychic Awakening. Themed around Eldar vs. Dark Eldar, here’s the potential value for hobbyists

Blood of the Phoenix Box Set

blood of the phoenixBlood of the Phoenix is pitting some Craftworld Aeldari up against the Drukhari being designed on getting players off on the right foot for these two armies. Each side is coming with updated minis that we’ve been seeing previews for a while now. On top of 25 minis, we’ll be getting a decal sheet, basic rules to jump into the fame for all the new 40k fans as well as a Blood of the Phoenix campaign book.

blood of the phoenix 2From Warhammer Community:

Blood of the Phoenix includes a 40-page campaign book telling the tale of the ancient grudge between those who fled the Fall aboard the space-faring Craftworlds and those who arrogantly continued the dark practices that first damned their race.

The book features three Echoes of War missions that enable you to recreate the exciting action described in the narrative, as well as all of the datasheets you’ll need to unleash the models on the battlefield.

  • Decal Sheet $?
  • Aeldari-themed Campaign book: $?

Craftworld Faction:

banshees

  • 5-man plastic Howling Banshees: These are $41 in Finecast. Following the recent trend in price hikes, these could go up to as much as $50
  • Falcon (Wave Serpent Chassis): $55
  • New Jain-Zar: We’ve seen most named characters (especially Primaris) cost $40. The same can probably be said for her.
  • Vyper: $35

Drukhari Faction:

incubi

  • 5-man plastic Incubi Squad: These are $41.25 in finecast. Moving to plastic, these could also be about $50.
  • Venom: $35
  • 5-man Scourge squad: $30
  • New Drazhar: Drazhar is $25 for his old model. However, following the recent trend, named characters might be running $40.
  • 5-man Hellion Squad: $30

Total MSRP: $365

Total Savings: $135 over the box cost of $230 for 25 miniatures.

Past Values Versus Blood of the Phoenix

For argument’s sake, let’s go back and take a look at past Box Sets that sold for around $170.

More Value: Wake The Dead Starter Set Warhammer 40k

  • 2018/2019 Wrath & Rapture (38 Models) MSRP: $160 Box Set Value: $312 Savings $152
  • 2018 Tooth & Claw (30 Models) MSRP: $150 Box Set Value: $345 Savings $195
  • 2018 Wake The Dead (32 Models) MSRP: $150 Box Set Value: $301 Savings $151

Now compare that to the estimated pricing on the new Eldar Box:

  • 2019 Blood of the Phoenix (25 Models) MSRP: $230 Box Set Value: $365 Savings $135 (estimated)

So as you can see even with slightly higher than current pricing estimates for the new Eldar units, this box not only has fewer models, it costs more, and has even less in terms of monetary savings over MSRP. As a matter of fact, over half of the savings come from the Falcon and Vyper kits that are just as old as the previous versions of the character models in this box.

It’s possible that unless there is something else inside this box that has determinable value, you can really make a solid argument that GW may be putting a premium on early access to new miniatures but locking them inside bundle boxes like Blood of the Phoenix.

plastic drazhar 1Values aside, the new models look amazing and they are clearly some of their best most dynamic Xenos sculpts yet. With models like this for the release of Psychic Awakening Book 1, every other faction’s players have tons to look forward too as their armies may get some fresh new miniatures as well.

Will you be splitting this box with a friend? Which character in the set has the cooler model(s)?
