What’s next for Dark Angels, Grey Knights, and Thousand Sons in Warhammer 40k. The first releases of 2020 will be here sooner than we know it…
As 2019 is coming to a close and 2020 lies ahead, we don’t know a lot about what’s on the way. We do know that more Sisters kits are coming (rumored for February), and that three Psychic Awakening books are going to be released as well.
It’s been said that we will be seeing one book a month and the one scheduled for January contains Grey Knights, Dark Angels, and Thousand Sons. Taking all this into account, here’s what we might be seeing.
What Could Be Coming in January 2020?
Before we jump in, this is all based on speculation, rumors, and past release patterns. Nothing is confirmed but is definitely somewhat of an educated guess.
What’s Possible for Dark Angels?
So we don’t take a complete shot in the dark, it’s smart to sprout off of what we know is coming next, Ritual of the Damned. As we said earlier, Dark Angels, Grey Knights, and Thousand Sons are coming inside. So what could that support possibly look like? Aside from the usual supplement books that usually contain a mix of relics, Warlord Traits, Psychic Powers, and Stratagems, there is usually a new model that comes along as well. However, being that this is the beginning of the year and hobbyists have their pockets lined with gift money, we might be seeing a bigger release than usual.
So looking at Dark Angels, we saw earlier rumors back in April of 2019 mentioning that Lion El’Johnson was going to be coming in a Box Set. Since the last known word we had on the Primarch was that he is asleep under the Fortress Monastery, this “Awakening” in Psychic Awakening could spur him awake and ready for action.
Grey Knights Can Only Go Up
As far as Grey Knights go, they can really only go up from here. With FAQ after FAQ stomping a mudhole in the army, GW really really should help these guys out. In terms of possible releases for Grey Knights, they are one of the only untouched specialist Chapters (like Deathwatch) that hasn’t received the full Primaris overhaul. It would be dope to find a new Primaris Draigo model, but what’s needed more than models is decent rules.
These guys still need a Doctrine bonus, only have one Warlord Trait that’s remotely good (a 6″ re-rollable charge bubble), and two Stratagems that are ever seen played. We get that they’re an army designed to take out Daemons and shouldn’t be equally equipped to decimate things like other Marines/Xenos on the table. However, right now these guys can’t even fight their way out of a wet paper bag.
Something Big on the Way for Thousand Sons?
Right now, Thousand Sons have this going for them.
- They’re one of the more popular Legions that GW loves to give rules to (the other is Death Guard)
- They’re an all-psychic Legion getting support in a series called Psychic Awakening
- Their codex is good but outdated and power creep is most definitely a thing.
With all of these rolled together, we could see Thousand Sons get the biggest wave of support Chaos has ever seen in Psychic Awakening. In fact, this next book will be the only time a single Chaos Legion has been thrown into a Psychic Awakening release. (We saw all the minor Legions mashed together in Faith & Fury).
So along with a possible new model, Thousand Sons are in the running to have the biggest amount of Chaos support seen from Psychic Awakening.
With three factions coming sometime in January, what do you think the support could look like? Will Grey Knights finally be brought up to speed? Will a Primarch return?
