Painting Orruk Brutes Red: eBay Rescue Tutorial

The Beat Up Orks

Ork BrutesHe’s been pretty excited about this project for a while now! Considering he’s never painted Orks anything other than green. If you’re looking for these on eBay, try and keep the price around $7 a model. Anything much higher than that, you might as well buy a brand new box of them!

Getting the Wet Palette Ready

Wet Palette ebayHe starts by putting the paints he’s going to use on the wet palette to get ready, then jumps into the priming stage!

Priming

Priming StageHe starts with Synylrez Brown Primer to give the model a brown tint and cover any areas the brush doesn’t get to. Then he uses Golden’s Dark Purple and does a bottom-up airbrush coat to get it ready for the red skin tone. Then he lays down Mephiston Red as a base tone on all the skin. Once dry, he does a quick highlight on all the skin with Wild Rider Red. Just be careful here to preserve the purple color.

If you want to blend the colors together a little more, you can use some watered down Carroburg Crimson with a brush. You don’t have to do this if you already like the way it’s looking.

Metallics

Metal StageStart with Dark Aluminum from Vallejo and hit all the metallics on the mini. This is just a base coat so get very good coverage here. This is a large part of the mini, so make sure to take your time. Next, he takes Agrax Earthshade and hits a wash on all the metal. To bring out the rusty feel, He uses the Ammo by Mig colors ranging from brown to yellow of their rust colors. He starts with the darkest color and moves to the lightest. Just keeping every layer thin and moving fast. If you go overboard, you can always just start over with the original silver color.

Leather and Pants

Pants and StrapsHe starts with Rhinox Hide and does a base coat on all the pants and leather pieces. Then he does a quick highlight with Skrag Brown to make it pop a little. lastly, he does the straps with Incubi Darkness to give it some contrast.

Flesh Highlights

Skin HighlightsHe mixes the two reds from before, Mephiston Red and Wild Rider Red, to start highlighting all the skin. Then he slowly mixes in Cadian Fleshtone and Kislev Flesh to the mix to slowly start bringing out the flesh tones and highlights on the mini. This will take a few coats so just keep each layer light and the lighter you go, the more it turns into a highlight.

Magical Weapons

Weapon StageYou could stop here if you want, but he wants magical weapons. So he takes it to the level with Liquitex Inks. He starts with a White Ink through the airbrush and does a few passes on the center of each weapon so the center is the brightest. After that, he puts some Yellow Ink into the airbrush and does some more passes mostly in the center but lets it get to some of the outsides.

Then he uses an Orange Ink and does the outsides of the weapon. Then, he puts some Red Ink into the airbrush and lightly goes over every color. Lastly, he puts some Black Ink in and burns the tips of the weapons with it.

Finished Orks
