Generally, when a faction gets a rework, the prices skyrocket; however, these new Imperial Guard prices seem to be pretty cheap…
It’s not very often we say Games Workshop has low prices, and these are still prices in actual currency, so they really aren’t cheap per see, but in “GW money,” it’s a decent deal (well, most of the kits). Maybe GW understood that people have to buy a lot of models to make an Imperial Guard army and priced them accordingly. Either way, we’re here for it.
Let’s compare the most recent releases with some of the past ones and see how they stack up.
Why Are the New Imperial Guard Prices So Cheap?
We really expected the Cadians to run for $60, considering the Death Korps of Krieg plastic kit that came out before them is actually more expensive. It’s rare to see a newer kit for the same number of minis (and about the same amount of bits) actually be cheaper! So, to us at least, $50 for this kit is both a surprise, and a reasonable value.
This DKoK kit might have a few more bits and poses, but it’s good to see GW not matching the price.
Cadian Command Squad: $45
The old squad was $42, so this is a slight increase, but we have seen tons of similar-sized models (maybe with fewer options) go for $60 as well, so $45 does seem too bad either!
Just look at the Celestian Sacresants; they really aren’t much bigger and don’t have too many extra bits. They go for $60, so there was always a chance the Command Squad would go for way more than $45.
Field Ordinance Batteries: $55
At $55, this is about $15 cheaper than we expected, because this kit has a comparable model that is way more expensive!
The Firestrike is on the same size base, and the weapon is a little bit bigger, but these run for $35 each, meaning for two, you would pay $70. Maybe this “lower price” is due to the fact you need more of the Field Ordinance Battery in your army lists, but it is hard to say for sure.
Cadian Sentinel: $45
Previously $35, the Sentinel is another big surprise as it has a lot of options, and there were a lot of similar models out there. However, we did not think this was only going to cost $45.
This Dragoon is slightly different, with maybe more bits, but goes for $60! So, the Sentinel going for $45 is actually a good deal comparatively.
Heavy Weapon Teams: $50
Last but not least, the Heavy Weapon Squad. While these got a complete rework, most heavy weapon squads (for any faction) go for $60 normally. So, at $50, they aren’t a bad deal in GW money.
You could even argue that the Rogal Dorn tank at $90 is cheaper than the comparable heavy battle tanks for the Space Marines at $110 each.
As we said, besides the special characters, the new Imperial Guard models are all quite reasonable in terms of “GW money”. So, it’s at least good to see the prices not skyrocket with the rework. Obviously, this will always be an expensive army, but at least it’s not insane in some areas.
