Judgement – Covenant Faction Set: $149

Nineteen minis come out to under $8 a model, and that’s before you even count the board, terrain, and all the cards, which seems pretty reasonable these days. The Great Journey booklet uses the fireteam-building rules from the core rulebook, so you can get the Covenant on the table straight out of the box. Want points? They’re free in the Halo Flashpoint app, so you don’t have to wait for any updates or new rules reprint.

Sgt. Major Johnson’s joining the fight too, but you’ll have to grab him separately from Judgement. He’s $30 on his own as a Special Issue mini, or you get him free with any of these three webstore bundles:

The Prophet of Regret Rolls In With His Bodyguards

Halo Flashpoint Covenant Prophet of Regret and Honour Guard

Inside the box you’ve got the Prophet of Regret, a second San’Shyuum, and two Sangheili Honor Guard, one packing a Fuel Rod Gun and one with an Energy Sword. Getting a Prophet on the table is a big deal for Halo fans. Plus, after all the time the Prophets spent hiding behind everybody else in the games, it feels pretty fitting that the Honor Guard tag along.

Halo Flashpoint Covenant Sangheili Rangers on Cairo StationThe two Sangheili Rangers split a Needle Rifle and a Plasma Repeater between them. They’re your long-range guys, picking off enemies while the leaders hang back and the Hunters lumber forward.

Elites, Grunts, and Jackals are the Real Heart of The Covenant

Then you’ve got the guys actually pushing into the firefight: a Sangheili Major with a Pulse Carbine, four Sangheili Minors, three Unggoy, and three Kig-Yar. The one we’re most curious about? The new Kig-Yar Sniper with a Beam Rifle. How the heck are the Spartan and Banished players supposed to cross the board with that thing aiming at them?

Halo Flashpoint Covenant Jackal, Elite and Grunt on Silent CartographerAll told, there’s a nice spread of weapons here: Needlers, Plasma Rifles, Plasma Pistols, a Disruptor, and Energy Swords. Best of all, that means real choices when you’re building fireteams, not just one obvious loadout.

Hunters and Two Bonus Missions Do Double Duty in Campaign Evolved

Halo Flashpoint Covenant Mgalekgolo Hunter and Jackal on Silent Cartographer

The two Mgalekgolo Hunters come with Assault Cannons, and you can also use them in the new Halo: Campaign Evolved, The Board Game ($59) too. Nothing wrong with a mini pulling double duty.

Halo Flashpoint Covenant forces inside a Covenant shipA bunch of the Judgement minis can replace the board game’s cardboard standees, too, so if you’ve already got the models, you might as well put them to work.

Sure, cardboard gets the job done, but it’s always more fun moving a painted model around the board. Plus, it’s another excuse to use these minis too!

The Firebase Entrance Flips Over to Forerunner for Big Team Battles

Halo Flashpoint UNSC Firebase Entrance terrain layoutThe new combat zone is a UNSC Firebase Entrance built from 3D card terrain. Flip the pieces over, and you can build Forerunner structures instead, which is a first for the game.

It’s also designed to work with the Starter Set terrain and arena. Put them together, and you’ve got the makings of a bigger table, which sorta looks like Mantic’s nudging us toward more Big Team Battle games.

Halo Flashpoint Firebase Entrance reversible UNSC and Forerunner terrainThe booklet’s got two new scenarios as well. Last Man Standing is a Big Team Battle elimination fight that should be a blast on the bigger table, and Land Grab is a standard area control mission with a shifting battlefield.

Oh, and the Covenant order dice and D8s are exclusive to this box for a little extra value.

Final Thoughts on the Halo Flashpoint Covenant

Halo Flashpoint Covenant Judgement expansion

Shipping kicks off around December 4th, right around the holidays, which is perfect timing if your group squeezes in some games over the break. Plus, if you have already got the Starter Set, this gets you a third faction and room for a bigger game in one box.

Overall, if Mantic keeps up this pace, we’re guessing more Covenant kits, and maybe a bigger version of the game overall, won’t be far behind.
