Squidmar’s $400 Paint Bundle Goes Big With 72 Colors

Squidmar paint set

The Squidmar $400 Color Mega Set packs 72 paints and 5 minis into one massive bundle, but is all that hobby paint worth the price?

The Squidmar Color Mega Set packs 72 bottles, five plastic minis, and a brush into one pretty loaded box. Of course, it’s not cheap either, with a US price of $417.99 when distributors get it this October. Both big kits were sold out on Vallejo’s store for a hot minute, so there’s definitely some interest here.

But are the minis and extras actually worth paying for, or would you be better off grabbing loose bottles? Between The Essentials and the eight smaller 4-color sets, we’ve got plenty of options to compare.

  • Sale: No discount, just launch pricing, plus a free Squidmar Color cap for the first Mega Set buyers on Vallejo’s store
  • Status: Mega Set and The Essentials show sold out on Vallejo’s store, US distributor release October 2026
  • Retailer: Vallejo
  • Featured this drop: Mega Set ($417.99), The Essentials ($224.99), eight 4-color sets ($21.99 each), single bottles ($5.99)
  • Price range: $21.99 to $417.99 US (15,95 to 299,95 euros on Vallejo’s store)
  • Contents: 72 colors in 18 ml dropper bottles, split into 48 acrylics, 7 metallics, 5 fluorescents, and 12 inks
  • Designed for: Fantasy and wargame minis, display pieces, and RPG characters
  • Why it’s good: A full paint line built to mix as one system, with minis and QR tutorials in the two big boxes

There Are Ten Squidmar Color Sets,These Two Are the Big Ones

There are a bunch of options, but the bundles are the easiest way to get all the paint in on buy. But’ we’ll also highlight all the smaller bundles as well.

Squidmar Color Mega Set: $417.99

Squidmar Color Mega Set box with 72 paints and free cap offer

Alright, this is the big box with pretty much everything. You’re getting 48 acrylics, 7 metallics, 12 inks, and 5 fluorescents. And if you want those inks and fluorescents in a kit, this is your only option. None of the other sets include them, so otherwise you’ll have to pick up individual bottles. You also get five Heroic 32mm plastic mini kits, a Squidmar Wight size M synthetic brush, and QR tutorials that stick to the paints already in the box.

Five Sona miniatures included in the Squidmar Color Mega Set

The real draw for us, though? Those exclusive minis. The biggest mini is Brok Moonturned, and he’s joined by Atle, Prince Tharkos, Severin the Vigilant, and Kripdhûn. Vallejo’s also throwing in a Squidmar Color cap worth over 25 euros for the first buyers.

The Essentials Squidmar Color: $224.99

The Essentials Squidmar Color 30-paint set box

Don’t need the whole range but still want a lot of paint? That’s where The Essentials comes in. Vallejo’s treating this as the starting point, with 30 colors split between 25 acrylics and 5 metallics. You still get four of the smaller minis from the Mega Set and the QR tutorials, but Brok doesn’t make the cut. Neither do the inks or fluorescents, so if you’re after those glaze and glow effects, you’ll need the big box or some loose bottles.

The Essentials Squidmar Color set opened with 30 paint bottles

Honestly, plenty of painters probably won’t care about those missing colors. Vallejo says the 30 paints can tackle almost any mini you’ve got sitting on your desk. And if you’ve already been painting with one of the older 12-bottle Squidmar sets, this feels like a pretty natural upgrade.

Is the Squidmar Color Mega Set Actually a Better Deal?

Here’s where the pricing gets interesting. Individual Squidmar Color bottles cost $5.99 in the US. Grab all 72 separately, and you’re spending $431.28. That’s $13.29 more than the Mega Set, and you haven’t even gotten the five minis or brush yet. Not bad, right? Usually, these giant paint boxes charge you a little extra for having everything bundled together.

The Essentials isn’t quite the same deal. Buying 30 bottles separately costs $179.70, compared with the $224.99 MSRP for the kit. So you’re paying roughly $45 extra for those four minis and the tutorial. That’s not necessarily terrible if you want the models, but if you’re just after paint, it might not be the best deal. You could pick your own 30 bottles and save the cash. Plus, Squidmar’s US shop already has The Essentials listed at $179, which pretty much wipes out that difference.

So, at those MSRPs, if you’re set on buying one of the big boxes, the Mega Set gives you more for your money.

Eight Squidmar Color Paint Sets for $21.99 Each: Which Ones Look Good?

Squidmar Color Fairy Skin 4-color paint set

Grabbing one of the smaller boxes first probably sounds pretty good. Each set comes with four bottles for $21.99, or 15,95 euros on Vallejo’s store. Four loose bottles would run $23.96, so you’re saving a couple of bucks. Here’s what they’ve got:

  • Elven Skin (74304): light, luminous skin
  • Dark Skin (74305): deep skin with warm undertones
  • Fairy Skin (74306): pink tones for fantasy skin
  • Ork Skin (74307): high-contrast greens
  • Demon Skin (74308): purples, pinks, and magentas
  • Leather (74309): leather and similar materials
  • Gold NMM (74310): gold without metallic paint
  • Steel NMM (74311): steel without metallic paint

Squidmar Color Gold NMM 4-color paint set

We’d probably start with the two NMM sets. Having four bottles that take you from dark to highlight makes the whole thing feel a lot more approachable. The skin sets give you that same kind of starting point for faces. Those look pretty fun if you’re getting tired of painting flesh tones in the usual beige.

Final Thoughts on the Squidmar Color Mega Set

Squidmar Color The Essentials paint set from Vallejo

US distributors are getting Squidmar Color this October, and we’d be surprised if the first batch at local shops sticks around long. So, if you’ve got your eye on the Mega Set, it might be worth asking your LGS to put one aside rather than just showing up Saturday and hoping they’ve still got one.

Shops can also order a dedicated Squidmar Color display rack, which should make grabbing individual bottles easier once the range is established. That gives you a pretty simple choice. Want to try the paints without spending a bunch? Grab a 4-color set for the weekend. Already know you want the entire range? That’s where the Mega Set makes sense.
