About Rob Baer: Founder, Publisher, & Managing Editor of Spikey Bits, the leading tabletop gaming news website focused on the hobby side of wargaming and miniatures.

Rob also co-founded and is a panelist on the weekly Long War Podcast, which has over 500 episodes and focuses on tabletop miniatures gaming, specializing in Warhammer 40k, and spent six years writing for Bell of Lost Souls.

Every year, he and his co-hosts help host the Long War 40k Doubles Tournament at Adepticon and the Long War 40k Doubles at the Las Vegas Open, both of which attract thousands of players from around the world.

Rob has also won many Warhammer 40k Tournaments over the years, including multiple first-place finishes in Warhammer 40k Grand Tournaments and even winning 1st place at the 2011 Adepticon 40k Team Tournament. He was even featured for his painting in issue #304 of Games Workshop’s White Dwarf Magazine.

With over 30 years of experience in retail and distribution, Rob knows all the products and exactly which ones are the best. As a member of GAMA (Game Manufacturers Association), he advocates for gaming stores and manufacturers in these difficult times. He also advises major hedge funds on stocks like Games Workshop and Asmodee.

He is always looking for the next big thing to feature for the miniatures hobby, helping everyone provide the value consumers want.

While he’s played every edition of Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy (since 5th Edition) and has been hobbying on miniatures since the 1980s, Titans of all sizes will always be his favorite! It’s even rumored that his hobby vault rivals the Solemnance Galleries, containing rulebooks filled with lore from editions long past, ancient packs of black-bordered Magic Cards, and models made of both pewter and resin.

Well I’m still brainstorming over the new orks since the drop of the FAQ a few days ago.  I’ve heard good things about burna drive-bys so I thought I’d work up a super aggro list.  While I’m sure it will do fine against mech and marines, long range standoff may be its undoing. Again this […]

I got a lot of comments on my Slitherguard recently, and everyone said they were a little lean for their namesakes, Tyrant Guard. I agree too, so I decided to beef them up to look like the bodyguards they are. I searched though my bits, and found some Carnifex torso plates that would work just […]

I thought I’d celebrate the recent Deff Rolla FAQ ruling with a walkthough of my Supa Battlewagons. When the Ork Battlewagon kit came out I knew I had to have a few. I opened the box up and furiously started assembling it.   When I was done I have to admit I was a little […]

Back a year or so ago I had a pretty good hybrid Battlewagon Nob Biker list going. Of course it worked good till the INAT game out and nerfed it. But now it’s back and with a few tweeks I think still competitive. The main tactic of the army is to either pincer with the […]

Well we were able to get more done on Warhound #1.  We’re working on the torso now, and while its not quite as hard as doing the legs, it’s still important to make sure everything lines up correctly. I also plan on going back and painting the interior. I just want to get the outside […]

Awhile ago during the scary days of Lash of Slaanesh, I set about making a sweet Daemon Prince model to lead my chaotic forces into battle.  What I thought would be just a simple conversion ended up turning into something more; Lor’Maxxim Lash Prince of Slaanesh.  To make my Lash Prince I used the classic […]

I had the pleasure of participating in an extremely well run GT called Cabin Fever back in January. One of the components of the tourney was a 75 question “pub quiz” style test. Now I know that kinda sounds harsh and brutally long, it actually wasn’t that bad. Each question is worth about 1/5 of […]

Well I couldn’t help myself. Being a long time follower of all things Chaotic, when the Forgeworld Chaos Reaver  Titan hit I just had to have it. But I was afraid that he would be a little lonely by himself in my display case so I bought two Warhounds to keep him company as well. […]

Hello again from Central Virginia, where the snow keeps falling so I keep modeling. I’m keeping steady so far with my Tyranid Waterbugz converting up some Slitherguard aka Tyrant Guard to keep my big bad leader bugs safe. This time I modeled them in the same style as my Slithercannons from before, but with a […]

Hey guys, well I was snowed in today so I managed to crank out some Hive Guard to match my Waterbugz theme. I’m tryin to have evverything look like its coming up out of the water, like they would have done during the first contact battle on Tyran Prime. I have a lot of metal […]

I’m back with part two of my Tyranid play tests. I’ve learned a lot so far about these guys and how they work.  So far I’ve been working with the swarm mentality, but after these last games I’m beginning to think that some spores may be necessary to take down Mech lists that are designed […]

So I had a chance to playtest my nids over the last week, and overall I’m very happy with their performance.  I’ve learned a lot and I think these guys really can do some damage to all comers, including Imperial Guard Mech. My first list variant went up against my Ork Mech Guard. You can […]

Well I’m back again, taking a break from playtesting and converting up my Waterbugz, to take a closer look at the new big nasty Trygon.  I had the good fortune to purchase one from Forgewold a few years ago, but never got around to painting it. So now we can compare these two close up! […]

A long time ago in the midst of the rise of “Zillanids” I started my Tyranid army. One of the things I wanted to do was make my bugs look different that anyone elses. I had seen some people convert their Canifexes by mounting them on their short shaft of a tail, and remove the […]

Here is my WIP conversion of the new Tyranid Harpy model.   It’s basically supposed to be a flying monstrous creature, so I figured I’d base it off the Carnifex and let the rest just materialize as I go.  I’ll be working on cranking out all the special Tyranid creatures over the next few months, […]

Here is my current 1850 Imperial Guard Army List. This is a pretty competitive list and won’t make you a lot of friends in casual play. I took the Pysker Battle Squad out because I feel the Psyhic Hood is a better buy for the rise of Tyranid powers and proof against the standard threats […]
