About Rob Baer: Founder, Publisher, & Managing Editor of Spikey Bits, the leading tabletop gaming news website focused on the hobby side of wargaming and miniatures.
Rob also co-founded and is a panelist on the weekly Long War Podcast, which has over 500 episodes and focuses on tabletop miniatures gaming, specializing in Warhammer 40k, and spent six years writing for Bell of Lost Souls.
Every year, he and his co-hosts help host the Long War 40k Doubles Tournament at Adepticon and the Long War 40k Doubles at the Las Vegas Open, both of which attract thousands of players from around the world.
Rob has also won many Warhammer 40k Tournaments over the years, including multiple first-place finishes in Warhammer 40k Grand Tournaments and even winning 1st place at the 2011 Adepticon 40k Team Tournament. He was even featured for his painting in issue #304 of Games Workshop’s White Dwarf Magazine.
With over 30 years of experience in retail and distribution, Rob knows all the products and exactly which ones are the best. As a member of GAMA (Game Manufacturers Association), he advocates for gaming stores and manufacturers in these difficult times. He also advises major hedge funds on stocks like Games Workshop and Asmodee.
He is always looking for the next big thing to feature for the miniatures hobby, helping everyone provide the value consumers want.
While he’s played every edition of Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy (since 5th Edition) and has been hobbying on miniatures since the 1980s, Titans of all sizes will always be his favorite! It’s even rumored that his hobby vault rivals the Solemnance Galleries, containing rulebooks filled with lore from editions long past, ancient packs of black-bordered Magic Cards, and models made of both pewter and resin.
These were painted up by my friend, Brother Chaplain Ginn for some recent GW Hobby Store painting competitions. Unfortunately they both lost- lol. It was mostly because we don’t shop there very much, and the locals voted for their own even though these blew all contenders out of the water. Gooooo Team! Checkout the putty […]
Read MoreBefore I went and basecoated up the titan I noticed the Turbo Lasers were kinda bland. I had forgotten that they didn’t make a Chaos version of these weapons (sad panda). So I had to whip something up quick to get the Titan done for the apoc game we were playing that weekend, cause I […]
Read MoreIt’s been a few weeks since the Blood Angels codex came out, and well I’m still reeling with how to deal with them. The main problems are that they close way to quick with my battle line, whether its 18″ rhinos or podding/ deep striking, and I cant shake them off quick enough. So in […]
Read MoreBack when I was getting my Orks army together, I decided that I wanted the little guys to have a little character. After all the Orks are a fun and unpredictable army, so why no jazz it up a little bit? Well I have to admit I went a little crazy with these guys. For […]
Read MoreWell I guess its been about a year now since GW game out with the Vendetta Model, and with it ignited a rules firestorm that still flares up to this day. The one question remains; How do you play it? Good Question. Is it a skimmer? If so why is it on that $#%*-ing stupidly […]
Read MoreA few months ago I went to Cabin Fever GT in Harrisonburg, PA. There was a ton of great looking armies there and I got permission from their owners to post them up. The first army was Death Guard by Doug Waltman. Doug is a really cool dude, and volunteers to help run Mechanicon GT, […]
Read MoreMBG back again with my Blood Angels Playtest Game 3 Video. This time though it’s different- I’m running the Blood Angels, and Travis is playing Orks. Can you say Ghaz vs. Mephiston??!! I also have switched up the list, turning it more into a drop/ aggro assault army then the mech version I was running […]
Read MoreThis was the third rewrite of my Blood Angels list. I kinda did it on the fly too, and made some mistakes, BUT I knew I wanted to play around with Mephiston. As TPM Blood Angel pointed out Mephiston is a Death Star, able to kill with realitive ease most units in the game. However […]
Read MoreWell the last give-away went so well, it looks like I’m going to turn this into a monthly thing for as long as I can. So without further adieu, I present the Spikey Bits Monthly Give-Away. On May 12th I will select another blog follower at random and they will win this box of brand […]
Read MoreWell I’ve been diligently working on this guy off and on for the past week or so. Here is where I’m at now. I’m just waiting on a few things from Forge World to finish it up and then post the how to guide. Of course you don’t have to use the FW parts I’m […]
Read MoreWell with all the hub bub over the new Blood Angels I nearly forgot to get my Adepticon Coverage in. I will correct that slight right now. So here are some more beautiful armies to gawk at! If you can make it next year I definitely recommend the event. -MBG My favorites are the defiler […]
Read MoreDeep down inside me I knew it was going to come to this. I would fall to the sweet siren song of converting up a Stormraven, and there was nothing anyone, not even my girlfriend, could do about (trust me she tried). Going in I had a good idea of what I had in mind, […]
Read MoreToday I wanted to talk about my Nob Biker squad, and their custom bases. This is kinda of a summary repost from my original three blog posts back in April ’09, but now that I got more followers I want to get some input on them. The best thing you can do to really show […]
Read MoreWell its morning here at Adepticon 2010. Here is a look at the scenery for the 40k events, and some sample armies that look great. The terrain looks great, and is pretty varied throughout the tables themselves, so I doubt anyone will play on the same table twice.
Read MoreMBG back again with an interesting debate, which Inquisitor ally do you take? It seems like more and more players take an Inquisitor ally with Mystics to protect against deep strike threats like Daemons, Drop Marines, and shortly Decent of Angels. Now we’re all adding in a Psychic Hood for threats like Tyranids, Space Wolves, […]
Read MoreHey everyone. I’m back with what I think is my best bug conversion to date; The Slitherqueen. This baddie will be the leader of my Waterbugz as they decimate the Ultramar sector, or at least central Virginia lol. Well as you can see I used the same theme as my Slitherfexes, but added some armor […]
Read MoreSo far we’re up to working on the pistons and weapons for Warhound #1. We knocked the rest of that assembly out in one night, and managed to clean and trim the weapons. We went ahead and cleaned up all the weapons I bought for both Warhounds just so we could have options to use […]
