BattleTech is getting a new core rulebook, Starter Box, and Core Box in 2026. See what’s changing, what stays compatible, and what it means for players now.
BattleTechis getting its first new core rulebook in nearly twenty years, and that’s big news!
Catalyst Game Labs is rolling out a new Core Rulebook, a new Starter Box, and a new Core Box in August 2026, with the big public reveal set for AdeptiCon 2026via their YouTube channel. These new releases are replacing Total Warfare, the Beginner Box, and A Game of Armored Combat, which means this is not just a refresh.
It is a full rework of how BattleTechgets presented to new and returning players. Here is the latest on the new products and when you can expect to see them.
Before anyone starts clutching their old record sheets, Catalyst says this is not a new edition of BattleTech. That’s possibly the best part of the whole announcement.
The core game is staying intact, with rules changes focused on making tabletop play smoother and easier to approach. So this is less “throw everything out and start over” and more “finally clean up the toolbox.”
We think for a game that has been stomping around pretty much unchanged since the eighties, that is exactly the right call.
Even better, Catalyst says existing mapsheets, Technical Readouts, and miniatures all stay compatible. Apparently, out of the thousands of record sheet variants already out there, less than 0.05% needed a tweak, and those were tied to a couple of niche edge cases. In other words, your pile of mechs is still good to go.
The New BattleTech Starter Box Looks Like a Better On-Ramp
The BattleTech Starter Box is replacing the Beginner Box and looks built to do a better job getting new players from “what does heat do?” to actually playing full games.
The big trick here is that the reverse side of each half-page record sheet introduces a taste of the advanced gear and rules from the full game. That may sound small, but it is a smart move. One of the biggest problems with starter products is that they teach the basics and then leave players hanging. This looks like a cleaner bridge into full Classic BattleTech.
It also comes with two ilClan-era BattleMechs, the Hammerhead and Kontio, which is a pretty solid way to make the box feel current instead of just recycling the usual intro set choices.
New BattleTech Core Box Is Doing More Than Replacing AGoAC
The new Core Box picks up where A Game of Armored Combat left off, but with a few extra tricks.
The standout addition is the new Sagas lore booklet, which helps players get their bearings in the setting, pick a faction, and figure out what kind of playstyle they want. That is a smart inclusion, because BattleTech’s lore rules, but it can also hit new players like a dropship full of bricks, so to speak.
The box also includes eight miniatures pulled from across different eras of BattleTech lore, including the Hollander, Rakshasa, Solitaire, Uziel, Mad Cat Mk II, Vulture Mk IV Prime, Regent, and Eris. This gives the set a broader feel instead of just playing the “greatest hits” over and over again.
The New BattleTech Core Rulebook Might Be the Real Winner
Catalyst says the BattleTech Core Rulebook builds on the success of the BattleMech Manual, which is a good sign already. Better organization and approachability are exactly what the line needed.
The bigger win may be the new Missions section, which gives players a shared framework for building games, from quick-pickup matches to larger, scenario-based battles. That is the sort of thing BattleTech has needed for a long time; less awkward setup, more stompy robot violence!
Final Thoughts From Us: New BattleTech Rulebook, Core and Starter Sets
Catalyst says this whole release was backed by the largest public playtest in BattleTech history, with six months of testing and five packets of revisions. That tells you this was not tossed together in a hurry.
Put it all together, and this looks like the best kind of update: cleaner entry points, tighter rules presentation, better onboarding, and no torching of the old stuff people already own.
For BattleTech fans, that is about as good as it gets. The release window for these BattleTech products is August, and Catalyst mentions they will also be on sale at the 2026 GenCon Game Fair.
