Gundam Assemble Las Vegas Open plans now include the game’s first North American painting showcase and live demos this October.
The Gundam Assemble booth at the Las Vegas Open just got a lot more interesting. What started as a spot to try the game before launch is now hosting a full painting competition, and that’s probably the bigger reason for hobbyists to pay attention.
For anyone who missed the first round of news, Bandai is bringing Gundam Assemble to LVO with live demos, and the game launches the same month as the show.
Now they’ve added a Gundam Assemble Launch Showcase, a juried painting contest built right into the booth. If you’ve been following our Gundam coverage, you probably remember Bandai recently clamping down hard on 3D-printed and recast minis.
That’s what makes this painting showcase a little more interesting because Bandai spent the last few months tightening its grip on what people could make, and now it’s giving painters a stage at LVO.

A painting contest is a pretty smart answer to that, honestly, and you don’t have to learn another rulebook to get involved. You can just bring something you’ve painted and put it in the case.
The Painting Workshops Tell You Who Bandai Is Really After
Think about who actually enters a painting showcase. It’s the crowd already clipping and building kits on a Friday night, or spending three weeks getting one model’s freehand right. Bandai probably wants those people into Gundam Assemble. The showcase is billed as the first major Gundam Assemble painting event in North America, and anyone who’s read our Gundam coverage already knows the property has always leaned hard on the building aspect.
Artists can apply online through August 31 to get selected. They can then drop off their models on day one so they can stay on display all weekend. Judging happens October 2 and 3. Three Judge’s Choice winners and one Best in Show winner get brought up on stage on the final day.
Just make sure you grab your model before leaving, because anything left behind becomes property of Bandai.
The Timing Reads Like an Apology
Not that long ago, Bandai clamped down on 3D-printed and recast Gundam Assemble minis before that market really got moving, and that didn’t exactly win the company many friends in that space. Now, a few months later, Bandai is giving painters a stage while more expansions are already lined up for 2027.
It’s hard not to read that as a peace offering before the Las Vegas Open doors even open. Maybe we’re giving one booth announcement too much credit, but the timing is hard to ignore.

The booth itself isn’t really the test. What will be worth watching is whether curious 40k players working the 2026 tournament circuit wander over, check out the models, and decide Gundam Assemble has earned some room in the hobby budget once it hits stores.
Bandai seems to be betting that the demo table gets people curious about the game, while the painting side gives hobbyists something familiar to latch onto. There’s also a line tucked into the announcement teasing more at LVO, so this probably isn’t the last we hear before October either.
