GW updated 40k’s rules with an impactful FAQ for Astra Militarum, Dark Angels, and Blood Angels for the World Championships of Warhammer.
Updated November 22nd, 2024, by Rob Baer with links to the World Championships of Warhammer preview and a video discussion on download for the FAQ itself.
New FAQ Arrives Ahead of Championships
Games Workshop has created a new FAQ ahead of the World Championships or Warhammer and promises another big update soon. These were sent out to players and not posted on Warhammer Community, but they clear up some burning questions. This is very similar to how GW did it at the Tacoma Open and incorporated it into June’s Balance Dataslate.
This FAQ is designed to ensure clarity and fairness, particularly for players gearing up for major events like the Grand Narrative. However, it is technically not official for other events (for now), but we have a download link for you below.
Advance Notice: A Shift in Communication
In collaboration with the Warhammer Events Team, the Warhammer Design Studio has opted for a proactive approach (after only updating 40k points in September with the Munitorum Field Manual). While rules updates typically follow a more rigid schedule, again, just before an official GW event, an exception has been made.
Astra Militarum: Precision Strikes with Tempestus Scions

The adjustment may feel like it takes away from tactical ability, but it was probably just way too strong before (especially with grenades and the servo-sentry). Still, the units using this ability cannot charge during the same turn.

Dark Angels: Defenders of the Imperium

Blood Angels: Rage and Resilience in Combat

This update makes it read as how we assume GW wanted the rule to work in the first place. So, it’s nothing wild, but it’s always better to have clarification.
Why This Warhammer 40k Rules FAQ Matters
These rule adjustments are not arbitrary. They reflect a concerted effort to enhance the gaming experience for all players. By addressing edge cases and potential imbalances, Games Workshop reinforces the principle that Warhammer 40,000 official events, like the US Open, are as much about fairness and clarity as they are about the epic battles and dramatic narratives that players create.
Plus, they literally say these changes reflect the ones coming in November and December. If you weren’t able to make the event in Atlanta, you can download a copy of the new FAQ for the WCW at this link here.
Wrapping Up the Rule Changes
Maybe just as important as these new rules changes, Games Workshop said they will now only be doing 40k Balance Dataslate updates every other quarter (initially, they said every quarter), while points changes will be every quarter. However, to make things even more muddled, they mentioned that a new Balance Dataslate would be coming “later this year,” which seems to indicate a potential December 2024 release, perhaps to be legal for events like LVO 2025.
Our next update later this year (2024) will bring a Balance Dataslate alongside an updated Munitorum Field Manual, as well as any further additions that may be needed to the FAQ and Errata
So, whether you’re fielding the unyielding Deathwing, the tactical Tempestus Scions, or the ferocious Death Company Dreadnought, the latest updates bring just the right amount of polish to the battlefield. Look for these changes to be part of the next official Warhammer 40k Dataslate updates in December 2024.
