Here are the prices and value for the Legions Imperialis Starter Box set and how much it costs to play a full-sized 3000-point game!
Obviously, this game has been delayed a bit, but it finally arrived in December 2023. So, it’s worth diving into all the individual releases and the starter box to see what kind of value that set will have.
Before we go, this is all based on the similar product reveals and the current prices of other games from GW. So, nothing is confirmed until Games Workshop says it, but we already have a ton of confirmed pricing for the release.

What Kind of Value Will the Legions Imperialis Starter Box Have?
There are a whopping 223 miniatures in the box, split between Space Marines, Solar Auxilia, and Titans. That’s 106 Space Marine infantry and walkers, five Space Marine tanks, 104 Solar Auxilia infantry and walkers, six Solar Auxilia tanks, and two Warhound Titans with brand-new plastic weapon options.
There are a ton of models in the starter box, but before we break down the value, let’s look at the other Legion Imperialis kits to see how many models come in them and what we think they will cost.
What Will Individual Legions Imperialis Kits Cost?
Games Workshop has been value careful not to mention anything about how the contents of the Start Box would be packaged as individual kits until the pre-order teaser. That being said, there were plenty of clues out there as to what the contents and pricing may be.
First up, there is a “large vehicle box” that Games Workshop said will contain four spartan tanks.
The same is true for the fantastic new Kratos tank as well!
When you look at the “smaller” tanks like the Russ chassis, they say those boxes will contain eight tanks.
Meanwhile, the Rhino looks to be coming in packs of 10.
A pack of 10 plastic Rhinos gives you a massive tactical advantage over a foot-slogging foe, and they’ll get to their destination safe and sound when flanked by four powerful Kratos tanks – so detailed, they could be mistaken for their full-size counterparts.
For Drop Pods, you also get 4 to a box, which means they will probably have about the same number of sprues as the Spartans.
Then, when you start moving into things like the Land Speeders, you go back to eight models to that box.
The Solar Auxilia Support Box features a bunch of smaller weapon batteries, so you get 12 of them in one box. At this point, it just feels like GW may be potentially making every box cost the same by adjusting the number of models in each kit.
For your basic Infantry that comes on 25mm bases, you have the Legions Astartes and the Solar Auxillera Infantry sets. These sets will come with a whopping 22 and 26 bases, respectively.
Build the core of a flexible Space Marine army with the Legiones Astartes Infantry set, collecting eight squads of Tactical Legionaries, four Contemptor Dreadnoughts, and an assortment of supporting troops into one convenient package.
This box might be an outlier, as you get eight Dreadnoughts and eight weapon batteries, but the batteries might be small enough they still fall in the same price point.
Another outlier may be the new plastic Dire Wolf Titans box!
So, what does all this mean? Well, it looks like GW is trying to make a one-price fits for their Legions Imperialis offerings, and we thought the most likely price per box would be $60. However, so far, it has turned out to be $50, like some of the new Tyranids troop boxes.
Things like the Dire Wolf Titans could be at least $75, as that was the most recent price for the Warhound two-pack when it was last available from the Warhammer Webstore.
Now let’s look at what Aeronautica Imperialis releases went for when they came out as a possible price point for Legions Imperialis.
Aeronautica Imperialis Pricing
The Xiphon Interceptor squad went for $42, but these came out before the latest price increases, and with LI being a new game, we don’t see GW going back in time to match the price. Also noteworthy is that the Thunderhawk was sold as one kit, also for $42 back in 2021.
While this is much lower than the $60 mark, it might give some credence for each box only being priced at $50.
So, with this in mind, we can actually make a reasonable estimate of the potential value of the Legions Imperialis Starter Box Set!

Besides the tanks, the rest of these prices are now confirmed.
- Warhound Titans $75
- Space Marine Infantry $50 (a box of 18 infantry and 4 Contemptor bases)
- Solar Auxilia Infantry $50 (a box of 18 infantry, 4 Sentinel, and 4 Charonite Ogryns bases)
- Space Marine Tanks $50 estimated (it looks like you get two “half boxes” from the above evidence)
- Solar Auxilia Tanks $50 estimated (it looks like you get two “half boxes” from the above evidence)
- Rulebook & Templates $60
Total Estimated MSRP: $335
Total Savings Versus $200 Box Price: $135
Final Thoughts
Well, let’s hope we are wrong on prices, as this could make the game a tad on the expensive side. While some of these boxes look to be $50 instead of $60, when was the last time you saw 8-10 models with bases this size go for much cheaper?
Either way, the Legions Imperialis Starter box does have good value if you are starting the game!

We all know this is a luxury hobby, so it’s just good to know how expensive building a Legions Imperialis army will actually cost.
Plus, you can always buy your minis from local game stores and generally get about 15% off, meaning you could knock a decent amount off these army prices if you buy locally.

How Much It Costs to Play 3000 Points of Legions Imperialis
In a recent White Dwarf, Games Workshop had a full-scale battle report for Legions Imperialis, so we’ll be pricing out the costs of using those two armies.
Right from the jump, this first one will be the more expensive list, as it has a lot of drop pods. Either way, at 3,000 points, these armies are giant. So, while you can get a decent amount of models in each box, there don’t seem to be many points in each kit by themselves.
Some of these units aren’t priced out yet, but we have a lot of info to go on as far as box contents and the fact that they all seem to go for $50 each.
So how much do you think it actually costs to play Legions Imperialis- maybe a couple hundred dollars?
Legions Imperialis Loyalists Army Costs:
Strike Force Argent Spear:
- Kratos Squadron $50
- 2 Predator Squadrons $100 ($50 each)
- Xiphon Squadron $50
- Sicaran Squadron $150 ($50 each)
1,460 Points cost: $350
Sky-Hunter Phalanx:
- Fast Attack Box $100 ($50 each, 1 box is 4 Javelins and 4 regular speeders- could be more, based on the infantry boxes)
- Bikers Box $100 ($50 each, looks to be a similar makeup as the Fast Attack Box with 4 of each type of unit)
460 Points cost: $200
Legion Support:
- Reaver Battle Titan $60
415 Points cost: $60
Legion Drop Pod Assault
- Fire Raptor Squadron $50 (similar to the Forge World World flyers revealed at launch)
- Drop Pods $200 ($50 for 4)
- 42 Infantry Bases $150 (2 and a half infantry box sets, barring separate box sets for Terminators, Jump Troops, Special Weapons, and Heavy Weapons, this seems the only way they will come)
687 Points cost: $400
Total MSRP for 3,000 points: $1010 (Actual cost is $1070 with a rulebook added in)
It seems like you’ll have to spend around $1000 for an army like this, especially since it doesn’t use many of the minis that come in the starter. Plus, some units are only half a box’s worth (but you still have to pay for the whole box).
Lastly, with the rulebook and templates added in separately, this goes closer to $1100.

- Infantry box $50 ($50 each. Marines are in separate detachments and two boxes worth of dreads)
- Legion Astartes Support Box $50
- Fire Raptor Squadron $50
- Rhinos $50 ($50 each, the army uses 9, and boxes contain eight rhinos spread across separate detachments)
648 Points cost: $200 (total box sets $300)
Armored Company
- Xiphon Squadron $50

- Kratos Squadron $25 ($50 for full box; others are in different detachments)
635 Points cost: $125 (total box sets $175)
Armored Company #2
- Kratos Squadron $25 ($50 for full box; others are in different detachments)
- Sicarans $50
- Storm Eagles $50
560 Points cost: $125
Legion Support:
- Reaver Battle Titan $60
Emperor’s Children Demi-Company
- Infarty box $50 (Other Marines are in separate detachments and two boxes of dreads)
- Rhinos $50 (other half in separate detachment)
- Predators $50 (only uses a half box)
397 Points cost: $150
Solar Auxilia Pioneer Company
- Infantry $50 (about a third of a $50 box)
- Rapiers $50 (about a third of a $50 Solar Auxilia Support box)
- Leman Russ Squadron $50 (half a box)
331 Points cost: $150 (Everything but the Rapiers comes in the starter set)
Total MSRP for 3,000 points: $810 ($870 actual cost with rulebook/templates)
This army is a decent amount cheaper, but it has a lot of half boxes, so the total costs still add up. You would have a lot of models left over to swap around in this list, though.
It looks like $800 might be about the minimum of what it will cost you to build a Legions Imperialis army, similar to what Games Workshop fielded in their battle report.
We did an article on the cost of playing Warhammer 40k, and it seemed to be around $800 as well. So, from the looks of this, playing Legions Imperials will cost you at least as much as it would to build a 2000-point Warhammer 40k army before adjusting 5-10% for the last few years of Games Workshop price increases.
