Demon Champions 1

Nurgle’s servants are countless as are his Champions and Daemons. Here is a selection of some of Nurgle’s finest and their deeds.

Champion of Nurgle are disease and death are the most potent forces in the galaxy and the Champions of Nurgle embody all of these. They are swollen and bloated, often little more than moving pus sacks and disease transmitters. Their bodies have been dulled to pain and as such can endure much damage before they die. Greater Daemons are the most powerful of the Chaos Gods’ servants. They act as wardens of their patron’s realm and have authority over the lesser Daemons of their respective God. It is often they who lead Daemonic Incursions. Such is their might that they cannot simply be summoned like Lesser Daemons. A greater Daemon needs to possess a living body in order to manifest itself. The followers of Chaos try to gain the attention of their gods in order to gain terrible power and great rewards. Those striving in the way of their god are known as Chaos Champions, whose ultimate, driving goal is to transcend mortality by becoming a Daemon Prince. Those who become Daemon Princes are counted among the most powerful creatures of Chaos, second only to the Chaos Gods themselves. However this path can as easily lead to another extreme. Throughout the path to power the Champion undergoes constant change, until either the god judges him worthy of Daemonic ascension or his form finally is overcome by the accumulated mutations and he descends into a mindless Chaos Spawn.

Foulspawn

Foulspawn

Foulspawn was one of the most diseased and disgusting of all Nurgle‘s Champions. It was said that the sight of him was so horrifying that hardened warriors who saw him were rendered incapable of any action while they gagged and retched in disgust. Nurgle was deeply fond of his unsightly Champion, and eventually blessed him with the reward of Spawndom. Many Chaos Spawn die within minutes or hours of their transformation, being killed by their former followers, slain in battle or expiring as their impossibly mutated bodies give out under the strain. Such was not the fate of Foulspawn, however as the Chaos Spawn not only survived, but grew and prospered. By some strange quirk of fate (or equally strange whim of Nurgle) Foulspawn was able to survive by ingesting and absorbing the fleshy tissues and bodily fluids of living creatures, which he achieves by grabbing his victim with his sticky, toad-like tongue, and then swallowing the still living creature whole.

Foulspawn is cursed with eternal hunger and devours anyone he comes across, which caused him to grow to a monstrous size and become imbued with the entropic energies of the Warp and seething with Daemonic plagues. According to legends however, while the Chaos Spawn’s growth and rampages greatly pleased Nurgle, it earned Foulspawn the ire of the Daemon Primarch Mortarion; as many of the Death Guard became victims of the Chaos Spawn’s eternal hunger. Rumours claim though, that Mortarion could not destroy a being so beloved by the Plague Father and the Daemon Primarch instead banished Foulspawn, into the rancid wilds of the Plague Planet. Some say Foulspawn still dwells there, but has now grown into the size of a living mountain, who is ever in search of more prey to devour.

Kortharis

Kotharis

Kortharis was the Chapter Master of the Snakebones Chapter, when they clashed repeatedly with the Death Guard, in the Subiaco Diablo Sector, during the Eleventh Black Crusade. Each time they fought the Death Guard however, he was forced to give the order to retreat, after they were swarmed with Plague Zombies; though he ensured their Apothecaries were given enough time to recover their fallen Battle Brothers‘ Progenoid Glands. This proved to be Chapter’s undoing though, as the Plague Zombies carried the Destroyer Plague within them and the harvested Progenoid Glands had been thoroughly infected with the deadly disease. When the infected Progenoid Glands were later implanted into new members of the Snakebones, the Destroyer Plague emerged and corrupted the entire Chapter. In the aftermath of this, Kortharis sought a cure for his corrupted Chapter, but was unable to find one – until Nurgle answered his plea for aid. Soon enough, the entire Chapter embraced their new condition and were reborn as the Plaguebones Warband.

Now a loyal servant to Nurgle, Kortharis has led the Plaguebones against the Plague Lord’s enemies for many battles and has recently been elevated to a Daemon Prince.

Scabeiathrax

Scabeiathrax The Blighted Lord

Scabeiathrax (Papa G’aapLord of the Blighted PitMaggotspore and The Wind of Nurgle) is an ancient Great Unclean One, a huge bloated sack of disease and contagion and one of Nurgle’s most favoured Greater Daemons. Scabeiathrax resides wallowing in one of Nurgle’s largest plague pits called the Blighted Pit, until he is called to plague the corporeal universe. Wherever he treads he leaves a trail of disease, filth and corruption. He carries with him the Blade of Decay, a crude rusting cleaver, imbued with the power to rapidly age and decay all it touches. Those who are hit by it find their wounds become instantly infected, and their flesh rotting away before their eyes.
