WarArtStudios posted this amazing Hulk miniature in our Facebook Group, and we just had to share it with you.  They actually made a YouTube feature on how they painted this model from the new Marvel Crisis Protocol game to in a “comic book style”.

Let’s dive into the details of the step-by-step process of pulling this off.

Painting Miniatures in Comic Form: The Basics

hulk painting 1Starting off, there’s nothing fancy here. He applied the chosen green paint from Vallejo in three separate layers after giving each layer time to dry.

hulk painting 2Once the green was a nice solid color, he moved onto the purple, which he also applied in layers as well. This technique isn’t anything really special. We should all be rocking thin coats on our minis and giving them plenty of time to dry before going back over them.

hulk painting 4Once that was done, he detailed the base a bit and pulled out details using varying paints from The Army Painter and Vallejo. Now, where most of us would probably start to apply a wash of either Agrax Earthshade or Nuln Oil, this is where he jumped to the comic book technique.

Painting Miniatures in Comic Form: Pulling Out & Creating Shadows

hulk painting 5For the comic book look, all there really is to it is drawing out the shadows and making them very profound. To do that, he pulled out Abaddon Black and a fine detail brush. Then, he went through every single recess on the mini. For those of you out there that have some experience doing pin washes, this might look familiar.  Except the shadows are pulled out with a much thicker, robust paint.

hulk painting 7One key part to note is he didn’t only fill in the recesses with paint. He also free-handed the hash marks to show what would be the normal striations in the muscle and the fine shadows they cause. Make a special note of the brush size he’s using. Don’t go into this heavy-handed. This process takes a little patience so be gentle with your strokes.

hulk painting 8Doing this literally all over the model, he coated each detail with a thick black line and smaller hash marks branching off.

hulk painting 9Carrying the work onto the shorts and the Hulk’s face and hair, you can see how the model really begins to come together.

hulk painting 10Finishing the model off, he free-handed some shadows onto the pavement as well. All of this inspiration came from the artist, Ed Mcguiness (who happens to do a lot of artwork like this).
