Originally there were two ways to fund the project. going for the Heroic or Mythic tier release…
The Heroic Tier was the most “basic” package you can get. However, there’s nothing basic about it. The Mythic Tier gave you everything from the Heroic Tier but also unlocked two other expansions. These were originally priced at $99.99 and $149.99, respectively.
Taking a closer look at the Heroic Tier, it includes all of the essential base game content. As well as four bonus heroes and an exclusive mini released as part of the HasLab funding campaign.
The Mythic tier contained everything in the Heroic Tier plus everything that’s set to release in the next two expansions: Kellar’s Keep and Return of the Witch Lord.
HeroQuest Mythic Tier Finished Product & Unboxing
Our friend and author Mike Haspil posted up some great finished product shots of his HeroQuest Board Game and everything that comes in the Mythic Tier!

First up, a mini; it’s a bit out of focus for all you camera nerds. It’s good to know Haspil and his fingers are still hobbying… but loads more photos, and they get better!!
Look at all the amazing detail! These HeroQuest Board Game miniatures definitely look worth it so far!
The game aides like the doors, furniture, and chests all look fan-diddly-astic as well.

The Art is great, and I love it when the mini’s pose matches the artwork; it really helps with the submersion.
Avalon Hill HeroQuest Game System
The game itself is just so nostalgic and awesome! For the price, you get a ton of stuff, it just looks like the only things you can’t get that were in the project are the extra missions. Still, if you missed out on the initial project, this is a really cool Hasbro offering.
Here’s everything you get with the box:
Includes gameboard, 31 monster miniatures, 4 hero miniatures, 15 furniture pieces, 10 skull pieces, 4 plastic rat pieces, 21 dungeon doors, 93 game cards, 4 turn-order cards, cardboard tiles, Quest Book, 4 character cards, Game Master’s screen, pad of character sheets, 6 white combat dice, 2 red dice, and rulebook.
The game comes with 14 quests, and has limitless replayability because players can also build their own quests and create their own stories. Gather friends together for an exciting night of tabletop gameplay in an epic battle of good and evil. The game is for 2-5 players, ages 14 and up.
With so many quests and minis, this will surely give you tons of play-through and enjoyment! Plus, games like this are always great to get people into the hobby and learn how to play RPGs without as much immersion as a normal game might take.
Is HeroQuest Good?
Honestly, the game is well done, and with all the expansions and such, the game has a ton of replayability. If you want a dungeon-style game with a ton of expansions and minis, you can’t really go wrong with Heroquest. Especially because so much is laid out for the Game Master, it makes it fun and fast to play compared to a lot of RPGs out there.
How Do You Play HeroQuest?
One person takes on the role of the Game Master/Dungeon Master, and they control the enemies the other heroes fight, run the scenario, and answer any questions players might have. Then, each player takes on the role of a hero, which includes the Barbarian, Wizard, Elf, and Dwarf. However, if you don’t have enough players, sometimes you can have one person pilot more than one character. That’s the general setup.
To actually play, the game master decides on a scenario for you to play and sets up the corresponding map with rooms, doors, treasure, monsters, and so much more! As you explore the dungeon and go through rooms, you will either find enemies to fight, booby traps, treasure, and all manner of things to overcome.
Before you enter a room, it is blank, and only the Game Master knows what’s inside, which gives a good taste of mystery to the game. Before each mission starts, the players are given a mission to complete, which can be all manner of things.
The game uses d6s for movement and combat. Generally, if everyone involved dies, you lose, but that’s not the only way to fail.
What Are The Heroes Like In HeroQuest?
We mentioned the main heroes above, but how do each of them actually play?
- Barbarian- He is your tank of sorts, he has a decent starting weapon, has high health points, and you generally want him in the front of your expedition.
- Wizard- Obviously, he starts with much less health, but his magic more than makes up for it in damage and trickery.
- Elf- The Elf is your middle-ground character, with access to spells while still being decent in combat. The Elf is probably the most dynamic character, just be careful in combat as the Elf won’t have nearly as high hitpoints as the Barbarian.
- Dwarf- The Dwarf has high health and a decent weapon. However, his biggest asset might be he can actually disarm traps without a kit.
Should I Buy HeroQuest?
If you have any nostalgia for the old game, it’s totally worth picking up! Even if you didn’t play the old version, the game is still super fun, and you can just play one-off missions or a huge campaign. With all the expansions, the game has a lot of playability. Also, for an RPG, it’s pretty straightforward with a low barrier to entry. In short, if you want a fun dungeon experience, it’s worth at least picking up the core set!
