The Black Library app traded a website storefront for a walled garden, and Warhammer readers lost every choice about where they read.
GW didn’t kill The Black Library; it just decided you no longer get a say in where you read it.
The rollout wasn’t exactly hidden either; Games Workshop said back on February 18 that BlackLibrary.com would “take its well-earned rest” after August 31. The replacement app went live on March 18 with more than 2,000 ebooks and audiobooks, and customers had roughly six months to link their old accounts and bring their purchases over, so nobody got blindsided by a surprise shutdown.
Plenty of hobbyists still missed it, which is easy to understand. With how often 40k rules change, you probably check the downloads page every week. You check a book storefront when you actually want a book. GW has also spent years putting more hobby content behind app logins, so another service moving that direction probably slipped past more than a few people.
The books themselves aren’t going anywhere, though. Black Library has operated on its own since it split off from Warhammer Digital back in 2017; it’s still publishing, and things like the Masterworks reprints keep landing on schedule.
What disappeared was the shop website, not the publisher.

GW Didn’t Kill Black Library; it Just Boved Their Counter
So, yeah, Black Library the publisher is still doing fine. New Horus Heresy books keep showing up, the Black Library Celebration lineup still gets its pre-order window, and the release schedule hasn’t skipped a beat through any of this.
What you can’t do anymore is open the Black Library store in a browser and buy directly from there. New purchases now happen inside the app, which lives on Apple and Google’s mobile stores and has built-in ebook and audiobook players. GW hasn’t released a browser or desktop reader, so its replacement service stays tied directly to mobile.
Keeping your ebooks and audiobooks together in one library is genuinely nicer than the old split, and we’ll give GW that much. In our opinion, none of that convenience required getting rid of the web storefront. We’d have happily taken the app as another way to buy and read Black Library books, but making it the replacement is where the trade-off starts getting a lot less appealing, at least for us.
The Download Button Was the Whole Point
We don’t really miss the old Black Library website; we just miss the download button.
BlackLibrary.com sold DRM-free files. You bought a book, downloaded it, and had the file sitting there in the same wonderfully boring way a paperback sits on your shelf. Back it up, move it onto whatever reader or player you already use, and there’s no reason you shouldn’t still have it 15 years later.
The old Black Library website let customers download ebooks as ePub or Mobi files and audiobooks as MP3s. Wargamer’s testing found that the replacement app only lets you access books through its built-in reader, although GW hasn’t explicitly confirmed whether file exporting is permanently gone.
Sadly, right now, all the reporting around the app launch shows that new in-app purchases don’t work that way anymore and stay on GW’s side of the fence.
So, that’s where this stops being just a storefront redesign and becomes a walled garden of sorts.
The good news is that if you already downloaded your files, they’re still there. Nothing reached into your hard drive and took them away. What disappeared is the easy place to re-download anything you never bothered saving locally. That sounds like a minor inconvenience right up until the missing file is the one you actually want. Anyone who slept on the Horus Heresy reprints already knows how annoying not being able to get to your books can be.
There is one thing worth clearing up here though, because “mobile only” gets thrown around a little too broadly. It applies to GW’s own replacement service because Warhammer ebooks and audiobooks may still show up through outside sellers like Kindle and Audible, which have desktop options of their own

Grimdark Archive Rebuilt What GW Switched Off, for Free
The funny part is that a fan already rebuilt a big chunk of what GW switched off.
Grimdark Archive lets you search by title, author, series, or setting, sort results a few different ways, follow reading orders, mark what you own and what you’ve finished, and jump straight out to purchase links. It currently lists 1,144 Warhammer 40k books across 127 multi-book series, with Horus Heresy, Age of Sigmar, Warhammer Fantasy, and Blood Bowl sections sitting alongside them.
Keep in mind it isn’t a store, though. Grimdark Archive doesn’t give you DRM-free downloads, and it can’t restore purchases from your old account. What it does bring back is the browsing and research layer the old site had, just unofficially.
Final Thoughts on the Black Library App
BlackLibrary.com was never going to win any design awards, as nobody needs to pretend the old site was some masterpiece. It did a few basic things really well, though. You could browse the catalog on a computer, buy what you wanted, download the file, and then read it wherever you liked.
The app handles buying and reading now, while Grimdark Archive fills in some of the browsing and research the website used to provide. What neither one gives back is the old DRM-free download button, and that’s the change that we think will probably hurt the most.
Either way, if you care about keeping the books you buy, the practical move is pretty simple. Buy from places that still give you an actual file when that’s an option, and back up the files you’ve already downloaded. GW gave customers months of warning before BlackLibrary.com shut down this time, but there’s no reason to expect the same window with other service changes.
