Games Workshop AI showed again in the annual report, and its careful wording raises new questions about GW’s public no-AI stance.
Yes, Games Workshop is talking about AI again, but this time it isn’t in a Warhammer Community post. It’s in the audited annual report, where the wording is about as official as it gets.
And that’s the important part becasue GW has spent years sounding firm on AI. It banned AI art from Golden Demon, even as artwork published by the company kept getting called out for familiar AI warning signs.
Now the language is a lot less certain. GW’s public no-AI stance has sounded absolute, but the annual report moves from a pledge to an admission and then hedges. By the end, GW admits it can’t promise AI isn’t being used outside the Warhammer studio, but many people think it’s already happening there too based on the evidence in their art and articles.
- The shift: GW’s annual report uses more cautious AI language than the firm no-AI message fans have heard for years.
- The wording: GW starts with a pledge but ends by saying it’s “difficult for us to say we are not using AI outside of the Warhammer studio.”
- The fine print: the pledge covers product design and IP creation inside the studio, not marketing or third-party software.
Games Workshop’s AI Section Pledges No AI, But Not Fully

GW then addresses the artwork controversies from the past year: “We have made a few human errors on the depiction of our products in our product marketing in the year; they were investigated fully to ensure that AI had not been used and that all our staff are following our internal policies.”
So, that’s now the official explanation. GW says the mistakes were investigated and weren’t caused by AI, following a year in which it quietly changed its AI policy and pushed back against hobbyist criticism.
But the certainty disappears in the final paragraph: “AI or machine learning engines now seem to be automatically included in third-party software whether we like it or not. So it gets difficult for us to say we are not using AI outside of the Warhammer studio, something we are just going to have to potentially live with and monitor carefully.”
So now, GW isn’t promising a company-wide AI ban there anymore. It’s admitting it can’t guarantee it in their products overall.
The Human Errors Line Reopens a Whole Year of Art Controversies
“A few human errors … investigated fully to ensure that AI had not been used.” That’s GW’s answer to the artwork controversies from the past year, including the six-fingered Space Marine that spread across hobby feeds just a little while ago.
GW says a real person made the mistake and its investigation found no AI use on that one. That’s possible, sure, but hobbyists have also seen the company apparently using AI in articles and lore content, with its artwork questioned more than once.
So when the “human-error explanation” stands next to those earlier examples, people will decide whether it’s convincing enough. or not.
The No-AI Promise Is Narrower Than It Sounds

AI is now “automatically included in third-party software whether we like it or not,” making it “difficult for us to say we are not using AI outside of the Warhammer studio.” So now the marketing, their website, and outside software all sit beyond the clearest part of the pledge.
That creates an obvious consistency problem beacuse GW also banned AI from Golden Demon and expects entrants to avoid it completely, while its own operation uses tools that raised enough concern for an internal investigation.
Final Thoughts on the Games Workshop AI Comments

Which makes the real question not whether one image was generated; it’s whether “no AI in the studio” is enough when the company admits the line is already getting blurry everywhere else.
Either way none of this will stop pretty much everybody from examining every image and piece of content that goes out from now on for the tell tale signs of abominable intellegence at work.
