T’au Empire 40k Combat Patrol Review
So, what kind of army are you getting here? Pretty much what you’d expect from Tau: lots of shooting, plenty of movement, and a game plan that rewards good positioning instead of running straight into a fistfight.
In smaller games, the Tau Combat Patrol rules let you play everything in the box as a complete force without needing anything else. The Devilfish gets your troops where they need to go, while the infantry brings the firepower. Simple enough, and you’ve got a decent little game plan to work with.

Is the Tau Empire Combat Patrol Worth It?
We’d put this among the better Combat Patrols we’ve seen so far value and play wise. The units actually work well together, and the savings are better than the usual “eh, it’s okay” deal. Sure, you’re not getting a ton of points, but as a way to start playing Tau, there’s a lot to like.
If you need all these models, the value is pretty hard to argue with. You’re saving $70 compared to buying everything separately, which more than covers the $68.50 Devilfish, so it’s basically free. When was the last time that sounded like a bad deal?
Now, if you’re going all-in on Kroot or want an army packed with battlesuits, that’s a different story. You might be happier just picking up the specific kits you actually need.
What Can You Play Out of the Box? (Combat Patrol Rules vs 40k Points)
Here’s the thing about Combat Patrol: it’s really its own game format. You don’t need to worry about squeezing every last point out of the box because the rules are designed around the models included.
But if you’re moving those same models into regular 40k, you’re getting roughly 320-335 points (as of November 1, 2026). Just remember that points change every update, so don’t get too attached to that number. The next update could move it either way.
What to Buy Next After the Tau Empire Combat Patrol
So, where do you go from here? Well, you’ve got two 10-model squads but only one Devilfish. If you like the idea of pushing up the middle of the board and grabbing objectives, another Devilfish and more Breachers make a lot of sense. That way, you’re not relying on one transport to make the whole plan work. And if battlesuits are more your thing, remember that the Commander is the only one in this box. A battlesuit-heavy kit would give you some bigger guns and tougher units to build around.
Then think about what you’re still missing. This box isn’t exactly loaded with answers to vehicles and monsters, so adding something with serious long-range firepower would help. You could also use a fast unit to grab objectives or handle actions while your Pathfinders focus on spotting and your main squad keeps shooting. That gives you a more rounded force without changing what makes this Combat Patrol work in the first place.
