The new Horus Heresy combi-weapons upgrade set finally lets you equip scores of veterans without raiding three bits boxes for spare guns.
Ask any Horus Heresy player where they found the combi-weapons for a veteran squad, and you’ll probably get the same answer. One arm came from another kit, a few bits came from a third-party caster, and somebody ended up with a plasma gun because the meltas were gone. So when GW showed off a dedicated Combi-weapons and Shotguns Upgrade Set, that whole scavenger hunt got much easier.
This set fits right into the decent recent run of releases on the Horus Heresy roadmap, especially with GW pushing Zone Mortalis again. An upgrade frame isn’t going to headline a release wave, but anyone building boarding forces or working with Breacher shield bits can see the use right away.
The only missing detail is the one that decides whether people actually buy it. GW hasn’t announced a price yet, only that pre-order details are coming soon.
- What you get: 40 two-handed combi-weapons, 10 Astartes shotguns, and 60 spare pouches and accessories in a single frame.
- Where it fits: compatible with MkII, MkIII, MkIV, and MkVI Tactical Squads, plus the MkIII Breacher Squad kit.
- What’s missing: no price and no firm date, so hold the celebration until the pre-order lands.
Forty Combi-Weapons In One Box Changes Equals Value For Veteran Squads
The number of weapons is what makes this set useful for sure. You get 10 each of the combi-flamer, combi-plasma, combi-melta, and combi-volkite, for 40 two-handed combi-weapons total. That’s enough to cover more veterans than most players will field across an entire army. The mix also covers the obvious jobs: flamers for infantry, plasma for elite targets, melta for vehicles, and volkite for the proper Great Crusade look.
So now, one box replaces the tough bits hunt players have dealt with since the current edition landed. GW has spent plenty of time selling big-ticket Horus Heresy kits, so it’s nice to see them finally handle the basic problem of where all these guns are supposed to come from. Most players will probably build a mixed loadout and magnetize the extras.
The One-Handed Guns Are Really About Breacher Squads Though…
GW also included two single-handed versions of each combi-weapon and two one-handed shotguns, and they aren’t just spare parts taking up space on the frame. Pair them with the MkIII Breacher Squad kit, and you can build the Veteran Breacher Squads from the Journal Tactica: Zone Mortalis book. Which is great for players buying into the Siege Assault Battle Group.
The shotguns aren’t limited to boarding shield builds, either. You can also use them for Reconnaissance Squads moving through cover and for units fighting in the cramped corridors of a Zone Mortalis table. A one-handed combi-weapon firing past a boarding shield is double value inside the same kit, if you ask us.
Final Thoughts on the Horus Heresy Combi-Weapons Kit
So for now, it all comes down to the price GW still hasn’t announced. An upgrade frame like this can be a solid buy or an easy skip depending on the final number, and 40 combi-weapons plus 10 shotguns give GW plenty of room on the price. But if they price it reasonably, and it’s an easy purchase for anyone with a stack of Legionaries waiting for weapons. If it’s too high, though, third-party casters will keep filling the gap.
Either way, an official combi-weapon kit is overdue. With GW saying pre-order news is coming soon, we should find out shortly whether this set is actually worth stocking up on or a pass.
