40k RIP: 13 Space Wolves Units Leaving Play for Legends

Major cuts are happening to the Space Wolves, as over a dozen units are missing from the new Warhammer 40k codex and heading to Legends.

Updated on May 27th, 2025, by Rob Baer with the latest info and missing units.

Looks like the axe has swung, and this time it’s Space Wolves on the chopping block. The leaked codex rules for 10th edition point to a major cull—big names like Stormrider, Lukas the Trickster, and the Stormfang Gunship are missing from the new points list. Translation?

They’re likely getting the Legends treatment. Here’s a list of all the models that are going away now.

Space Wolves Hit with the Legends Treatment

Space wolves CodexWell, it’s happened again. Another codex leak, another handful of classic units quietly shown the door. This time, the axe has swung toward Fenris, and a whole pack of Space Wolves models look like they’re headed straight for the GW Legends list.

Let’s call it what it is: Games Workshop is tightening things up for 10th edition. With each new codex, we’re seeing more units disappear from the match play lineup. The Eldar and Imperial Guard both had their share of farewells, and now the Sons of Russ are howling into the wind.

Who Didn’t Make the Cut?

Space Wolves PointsLet’s talk specifics. A lot of names didn’t make the cut. Canis Wolfborn, gone. Harald Deathwolf? Also missing. Lukas the Trickster? Looks like he pulled his last prank.

And then there’s the whole fleet of flying bricks—Stormfang Gunship and Stormwolf—absent from the points list. If you’re a Space Wolves collector, this list might feel like a gut punch:

  • Canis Wolfborn
  • Cyberwolf
  • Harald Deathwolf
  • Hounds of Morkai
  • Krom Dragongaze
  • Logan Grimnar on Stormrider (he’s just on foot now)
  • Long Fangs
  • Lukas the Trickster
  • Skyclaws
  • Stormfang Gunship
  • Stormwolf
  • Multiple Wolf Guard variants
  • Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf
  • Wolf Scouts

That’s a pretty dramatic reshuffle.

Why It’s Happening

Hounds of MorkaiGames Workshop seems to be trimming the fat and focusing on units that are well-supported by current models. If it doesn’t have a recent kit—or sells slower than month-old paint—it’s at risk.

Streamlining makes rule maintenance easier and gives newer players fewer hoops to jump through. However, it totally undermines the rule of cool and homogenizes the game. So it depends which side you’re on, we guess.

Legends Doesn’t Mean Gone Forever

SpaceWolves_Stormwolf_DariuszObarekThat doesn’t mean these units are dead. They’re just not part of the matched play game anymore. Legends’ rules still exist, and narrative play is alive and well. You can still field your Logan on Stormrider and howl proudly. You just won’t see him popping up in tournament lists.

What You Should Do Next

So what’s the play for collectors and hobbyists? Keep building what you love, but be realistic when planning purchases. If it’s not on shelves and not in the codex, chances are it’s not coming back anytime soon. GW’s pattern this edition has been pretty consistent: out with the obscure, in with the streamlined.

Still Plenty of Teeth in This Army

Logan GrimnarSpace Wolves are still a solid faction with a distinct flavor and some great units on offer. The loss of a few characters and vehicles doesn’t erase that. Just maybe… keep those Thunderwolves on the display shelf for now.

If you’re holding out hope for a comeback, never say never. This is Warhammer 40k. Anything can happen except maybe a new Cyberwolf kit. Let’s not get carried away…

Hi I’m not a space wolf player I’m into chaos faction’s and dipping my toes into black templare but all I’m seeing is them cutting the carcter lineup’s on all those other factions of the less popular armies by the looks of things then thay just incase the lineup ultra marines lineup all the time and then there cutting pure units and characters from all the others that’s not as popular all those loyal space wolves players are going to loose a load of there armies to legend’s it’s gw just trying to make more money to force people to have to replace a load of there armies with all there new models it’s absolutely disgusting
