Updated November 19th, 2024, by Rob Baer with new information and links to relevant content and the new Slaves to Darkness Spearhead value breakdown.
The new AoS Darkoath Army Box Set is here for Age of Sigmar, but will it be worth the pickup? The box comprises 27 miniatures and the Battletome supplement, making it the starting point for all the new Darkoath models!
Contents List, Release Date, Pricing & Value
We originally estimated a $200 price point for this box, as the last two army set boxes have been that price. It turns out Games Workshop did keep the Darkoath Army Set price the same as their 2023 army boxes, perhaps because there are approximately the same number of miniatures inside, despite a 2024 release date.
The release date of the Darkoath Army Set is June 8th, 2024. Here is a contents list of what comes in the new box.
- 1x Darkoath Chieftain on Warsteed
- 1x Wilderfiend
- 20x Darkoath Marauders
- 5x Darkoath Fellriders

Marauders:
Accompanying the Darkoath heroes are new plastic Marauders. They are a relentless horde of warriors driven by a thirst for battle and conquest. With their muscular frames and savage weaponry, the Marauders epitomize the savage beauty of Chaos, ready to carve their path of destruction across the Mortal Realms.
Fellriders:
For those who seek to strike swiftly and mercilessly, the Darkoath Fellriders offer a formidable cavalry force. Mounted atop fearsome steeds, these warriors unleash devastation upon their foes with lethal precision. Which embodies the untamed fury of Chaos in every charge.
AoS Darkoath Chieftain on Warsteed:
Perched atop their intimidating, blade-masked warsteeds with flanks decorated by the skulls of past challengers, Darkoath Chieftains scan the battlefield with the precision of an alpha wolf eyeing its next meal. Their sharp gaze picks out every flaw in the enemy’s formation, honing in on weaknesses with deadly intent. When these fierce warriors unleash their fury, their brutal strikes carve through foes, leaving behind a staggering toll of the defeated.
Wilderfiend:
Wilderfiends serve as both protectors and relentless punishers of the Darkoath tribes. Once celebrated mortal heroes, each Wilderfiend slipped up in their loyalty to the Dark Gods, earning themselves a monstrous makeover into blood-hungry terrors. Now, they lurk in the shadows of the tribes they once led, driven by an insatiable hunger for flesh and sacrifice.
With beastly strength and raw, primal sorcery, they hunt their prey, embodying a twisted blend of brute force and dark magic that spells doom for anything—or anyone—in their path.
Battletome Supplement:
In addition to the awe-inspiring miniatures, the Darkoath Army Set includes a 28-page supplement to the Battletome: Slaves to Darkness. This is also available as a free PDF download from Games Workshop here. With the Darkoath Army Set, you have the power to shape the fate of the Mortal Realms. Whether you embrace the dark allure of Chaos or stand against it, this box offers endless battle opportunities on the tabletop.
Darkoath Army Box Points and Gameplay in Age of Sigmar
So, you’re wondering how many points the Darkoath Army Set racks up, eh? Well, in 4th Edition AoS, this box hits with about 650 points. But, as you know, the tides of the Mortal Realms are ever-shifting, and with the latest points updates, that number could quickly fluctuate. One minute, you’re ready to conquer the world, and the next, you’re recalculating your list because the points gods have decided to have some fun.
How Many Points is the Darkoath Army Set?
So, how does 650 points hold up? In standard AoS battles, this set has the strength to lead an aggressive front or provide defensive support to reinforce a larger Slaves to Darkness or Chaos Undivided army. The Darkoath Chieftain on Warsteed alone packs a punch as a hero unit, acting as a rallying force on the field and dealing significant damage. Add in the Wilderfiend’s sheer chaos (in every sense) and the 20 Marauders who bring relentless muscle to the fight, and you’re ready to make an impact.
For those looking to add to their collection, this set is also an attractive option due to its scalability. The points allow it to blend smoothly with other Slaves to Darkness units or Chaos Undivided forces. And because it doesn’t max out your point budget, it leaves room for personalization or additional units in larger matches. Whether standing alone or as a valuable addition to a larger army, the Darkoath Army Set brings the points—and the pain. This isn’t just about points; it’s about having the right pieces to build a story on the battlefield.
Unit Roles and Synergy
Each unit in the Darkoath Army Box is crafted to play a specific role, and together, they create a force that’s as cohesive as it is chaotic. The Darkoath Chieftain on Warsteed is your obvious leader, inspiring and rallying nearby warriors while charging with ferocity that rivals any battlefield presence. He’s best positioned at the front, where his commanding influence can bolster the Marauders and guide them toward key enemy targets.
Next, the Wilderfiend steps in as both a guardian and a terror. This monstrous creature provides a menacing buffer to shield weaker units while striking fear into the opposition. Its role as a “heavy” makes it ideal for disrupting enemy lines and breaking through defenses—especially useful in scenarios where your Marauders or Fellriders need a clear path.
Speaking of the Darkoath Marauders, these battle-hardened warriors bring flexibility to your lineup. Armed with an assortment of weapons, they serve well as frontline units, perfect for holding objectives and absorbing enemy attacks. Their strength lies in numbers, and with twenty Marauders at your disposal, they can flood key areas, making them a nightmare for opponents to ignore.
Finally, the Darkoath Fellriders add speed and range to your force. Acting as light cavalry, they excel at hit-and-run tactics. With javelins in hand, they can harass enemy flanks or charge vulnerable targets, allowing for tactical maneuvers that keep your opponent on their toes.
Assembly and Painting Tips for Darkoath Miniatures
So, you’ve got your hands on the Darkoath Army Set, considering the release date has come and gone—now the real fun begins. But before you rush in with glue flying everywhere, let’s talk about how to make this process smoother than the Marauders’ well-oiled biceps. These models come in multiple parts, and while it’s tempting to throw them together quickly, you’ll want to approach it with a bit of care.
How to Assemble the Darkoath Miniatures Efficiently
First things first: sort your pieces. The last thing you want is to mix up your Chieftain’s severed head collection with a Marauder’s shield. Lay everything out, and maybe even snap a pic with your phone for reference.
When it’s time to assemble, test-fit the parts before gluing anything down. Miniatures like these can have snug connections, but sometimes even the tiniest mismatch can result in awkward poses or gaps. A dry run lets you catch those moments when the Fellrider’s arm doesn’t quite want to meet the javelin handle.
As for the bane of every model builder: mold lines. These little lines can turn a masterpiece into a mess if left unchecked. Get yourself a trusty hobby knife or a mold line remover and gently scrape them away. The smoother the surface, the better your paint will look when it’s time to bring these mini-warriors to life. Just be careful not to go too deep—you don’t want your Marauder looking like he’s been in a scrap before even hitting the battlefield.
Lastly, consider sub-assemblies. This is especially helpful with the larger models, like the Chieftain on Warsteed. Keeping certain parts separate while painting—like shields or weapons—makes it easier to get to those hard-to-reach places. You’ll thank yourself later when you don’t have to bend your brush like a pretzel.
Painting Tips
Best Practices for Painting Barbarian-Themed Miniatures
Now that your Darkoath figures are assembled and ready for war let’s talk painting. These aren’t just any figures; these are grim, Chaos-worshipping barbarians who look like they spend their downtime wrestling bears and collecting scars. Capturing that rugged, primal feel in your paint job is key.
Fur textures are everywhere on these models, and you’ll want to make them pop. Start with a dark base color, then build up highlights with progressively lighter dry-brushing. Focus on the raised areas of the fur to give it depth, making sure to go lightly—you want the texture to stand out, not look like a fuzzball. Check out a ton of awesome fur painting techniques from Squidmar here!
When it comes to scars and tattoos, less is more. For scars, try using a thin line of a light skin tone and shade around it to create depth. As for tattoos, these barbarians wouldn’t be caught dead without some battle ink. Freehand dark, tribal-like designs on biceps or shoulders. Keep it subtle but menacing—think “I’m here to conquer” rather than “I spent a weekend at a music festival.” Check out a ton of awesome barbarian skin painting techniques from Squidmar here!
Speaking of grim details, don’t forget the severed heads and horse masks. You’ll want to lean into a muted, gruesome palette here. Pale, grayed-out flesh for the severed heads works wonders, and for the horse masks, keep things earthy—these aren’t fancy knights, after all. Make them look worn and brutal, with some dry-brushing to highlight the texture.
With these painting tips in mind, your Darkoath army will look like it’s just stormed straight out of the Chaos wastes and is ready to bring doom to the Mortal Realms.
Darkoath Lore & the Dark Gods
Storyline and Lore in the Mortal Realms
The Darkoath tribes are no ordinary band of marauding humans; they’re descendants of those Sigmar abandoned, turning to Chaos for survival in the harshest corners of the Mortal Realms. Their hatred for Sigmar is legendary, a seething bitterness rooted in centuries of betrayal. To them, Sigmar is the “Craven God,” the one who promised them protection but fled when Chaos first invaded.
For the Darkoath, life is war, and their faith in the Dark Gods runs deep. They see the Mortal Realms not as a series of kingdoms to be defended but as a hunting ground, one where the strongest rise and the weak perish. And in their eyes, nothing is stronger than Chaos.
Darkoath warriors make oaths to the Dark Gods, swearing allegiance to Khorne, Tzeentch, Nurgle, or Slaanesh—or, for the more ambitious, to Chaos Undivided. Breaking an oath is the greatest sin, and those who do suffer terrible fates, like becoming the monstrous Wilderfiend. For the tribes, their very lives are offerings to the gods, and every battle, every raid, is a test of their worthiness.
Each tribe has its own customs, but all share the same goal: to win the favor of Chaos by conquering, pillaging, and burning their way through the Realms. Their leaders, like the Chieftain on Warsteed, are chosen by strength, charisma, and the number of heads they’ve collected from enemies.
The Role of the Darkoath in Age of Sigmar
Slaves to Darkness and Chaos Undivided
In the grand scheme of Age of Sigmar, the Darkoath tribes serve as foot soldiers for the greater powers of Chaos, specifically under the banner of Slaves to Darkness. They are human warriors, hardened by the realities of a world ruled by gods who thrive on violence, manipulation, and decay. While many serve a single god like Khorne or Nurgle, the most feared warriors swear loyalty to Chaos Undivided, serving all the gods equally and seeking power from the entire pantheon.
The Darkoath bring something different to the table compared to the more demonic forces of Chaos. They are raw, brutal, and relatable in a twisted sense—humans who made a terrible deal with Chaos to survive in a world that had forsaken them. Their armies don’t rely on dark magic or monstrous creatures as much as their unrelenting will to fight and conquer.
In any Slaves to Darkness army, the Darkoath represents a primal, human element. While you’ve got your Daemon Princes and sorcerers wielding dark magic, the Darkoath are there, charging into battle, axes in hand, ready to crush the so-called “forces of order” and take what they believe is rightfully theirs.
