GW Pulls the Plug on The Necromunda RPG

Necromunda RPG

The Necromunda RPG has vanished from GW preview material just weeks after its reveal, leaving its future surprisingly unclear.

One broken page could be chalked up to a WarCom site update gone wrong. But someone at GW also went back into the Autumn Preview roundup and cut Necromunda from the numbered list in a second round of edits too.

We wouldn’t call the RPG dead yet, but we also wouldn’t hold our breath for “coming soon” as they said either. So if you’ve been following the underhive for a long time, it’s pretty clear GW doesn’t want anyone treating the September 18th reveal as an active upcoming release anymore… and it hasn’t said a word about why.

Honestly, that stings for anyone who’s been happily playing Necromunda lately, as the RPG had people hyped up and the recent releases have looked great. A miniatures-driven RPG set in the hive looked like one of GW’s easiest sells all autumn.

GW Showed Us a Finished Box, Then Went Back and Cut It

ARTICLE SUMMARY:
  • The take: Necromunda Roleplay isn’t confirmed canceled, but GW is backing away from the September reveal instead of just going quiet.
  • The evidence: the dedicated WarCom article now 404s, and the Big Autumn Preview roundup skips from Blood Bowl to Warhammer Quest with no Necromunda entry.
  • If we’re right: anyone planning around “available soon” should expect a delay, a redesign, or worse, and shouldn’t treat September’s box contents as final.

Necromunda RPG GameThis wasn’t a silhouette and a “coming someday.” On September 18, the Warhammer Community called it a “fully-fledged, miniatures-driven RPG” and backed it up with a product you could practically price out at the FLGS counter. We got to see 18 miniatures, a 224-page rulebook, two adventures, character creation rules, named characters, dice mechanics, character stats, an Arbitrator screen, and handouts.

GW even had the first expansion, Journal Apocrypha: Denizens of the Hive, lined up and said both would be “available soon.” That’s the level of detail we’d expect from a new Necromunda starter set a few weeks out from pre-orders, not something that vanishes fourteen-ish days later.

And then it did, as the dedicated article now throws a 404 on the English URL.

GW Missed a Few Spots on the Way Out

Necromunda RPG Cut out of list(GW has already taken it out of the listed reveals)

Here’s the funny part. Further down that same roundup page, the original September 18 live-blog entry still read: “Tabletop roleplay in the brutal underhive of Necromunda,” but GW has since cleaned that up. So the product was gone from the list, while the live blog on the same page still says it was revealed.

And the leftovers keep turning up. GW’s own Necromunda downloads page was still indexing “Roleplay in the underhive” (but it’s not on the actual page if you look for it in news), and search results keep surfacing the deleted article, which is probably how a lot of people found it in the first place.

The localized pages are even stranger. French and Spanish versions of the announcement stayed reachable (but have since been changed, and if you click the links, you’ll see GW took the page down entirely and put up a new post for the languages) through search after the English page disappeared, carrying the same September 18 reveal and the same product description.

Then there’s the video. The reveal is baked into GW’s Autumn Preview stream, so GW can delete links and articles all day, but it can’t erase the announcement without editing or replacing the stream itself. Honestly, that tells us the RPG didn’t stop existing; it just stopped being promoted.

The recent Q&A was a perfect chance to clear this up, but the Necromunda RPG never came up. So there’s no public GW statement saying it’s canceled, delayed, or coming later.

That leaves us guessing, so here are the four possibilities as we see them, least dramatic first:

  • The product changed: Box contents, rules, branding, pricing, release structure, or even the name may have shifted after the preview. Pulling the detailed article makes sense if GW doesn’t want those screenshots and specs floating around as “final.”
  • The release slipped: If it isn’t coming remotely “soon” anymore, GW probably doesn’t want its preview page advertising a product with no date. This one fits the roundup edit pretty well.
  • A licensing or publishing snag: GW presented this as its own tabletop RPG, not one of the licensed games like Imperium Maledictum or the other 40k RPGs we’ve seen. That makes rights, positioning, or who’s responsible for production plausible headaches, though there’s zero evidence for any of it yet.
  • It’s shelved or canceled: Absolutely possible, since GW didn’t just stop talking about it; it actively removed prominent references to something it unveiled about two weeks earlier. But there’s no cancellation notice, so calling it dead gets ahead of the evidence.

If you ask us, the first two line up best with what GW actually did. Honestly, pulling a detailed page is what you do when the details are wrong or early, and that’s a much smaller problem than a dead product.

Final Thoughts on the Necromunda RPG

GW can keep quiet, but quiet isn’t the same as clearing it up. This reveal was too specific to just fade out, with model counts, page counts, a GM screen, and an expansion already named, so something changed after the marketing machine had already hit full product reveal.

Honestly, the next thing to look for is whether the stream gets edited, the French and Spanish pages come down, or Necromunda Roleplay quietly reappears with a new date (or a new name). Until one of those happens, we’d treat September 18 as what GW planned, not what’s coming.

And if GW wants hobbyists to trust the next “available soon” previews, a one-line update would go a long way to clearing this up.
