Blood Angels Codex 2027 Reveal: GW Trying to Save Its Christmas Battleforce Sales

Blood Angels Corbulo Codex Reveal for 2027

GW revealed the Blood Angels Codex and Corbulo for 2027, but the timing could make its Christmas Battleforce much easier for players to justify.

Corbulo coming back? Yeah, that’s great news. But the timing here may be a little suspicious. GW dropped the reveal on Warhammer Community on November 5, announcing a new Codex for spring 2027, a new Sanguinary High Priest Corbulo, more new minis coming after him, and a December rules update for the Jump Pack Chaplain. Pretty good day for Blood Angels players, right?

Here’s the thing, though. That announcement came just nine days before Christmas Battleforce pre-orders open, and one day after the retailer pre-order deadline with a Blood Angels Battleforce box that’s been getting picked apart by hobbyists since October.

So was this always the plan, or is GW trying to give players a reason to buy that box?

That Chaplain Rules Update Is Pretty Convenient

ARTICLE SUMMARY:
  • What’s happening: GW revealed a spring 2027 Blood Angels Codex, a new Corbulo, and December rules for the Jump Pack Chaplain, nine days before Christmas Battleforce pre-orders.
  • What we have seen so far: The Angelus Assault Force (11 models for $255) sits near the bottom of the value rankings, and stores we talk to say the Chaos boxes are pulling most of the early interest.
  • What’s next: Pre-orders open November 14, and that weekend should show whether the Codex news moves the Blood Angels box (which is our speculation, not anything GW has said).

GW revealed the next faction on the 2027 40k Codex Roadmap is Blood Angels:

The big news is Codex: Blood Angels is coming in spring 2027.

Alongside that book will be new miniatures, including the return of the bearer of the Red Grail: Sanguinary High Priest Corbulo. This is just one part of some incredible Warhammer 40,000 releases coming in the spring for Xenos, Chaos, and non-Space Marine Imperial armies.

Which is great for sure.  The Codex and Corbulo would’ve been plenty of news on their own as Blood Angels players have been eagerly waiting for a modern Corbulo, and now one is coming. Plus, a spring release means we know when the current Blood Angels Codex is getting replaced.

But then GW threw in something else: a December rules update for the Blood Angels Chaplain with Jump Pack, including a datasheet that actually supports his inferno pistol.

And guess who’s in the Angelus Assault Force? Yep, that exact Chaplain.

Now, getting rules for a pistol isn’t some huge deal by itself. But think about it. Everything else in the announcement is coming next spring, while those Chaplain rules arrive in the December 7 40k Balance Dataslate rules update, right after the box goes up for pre-order on November 14.

GW could’ve just shown off Corbulo and called it a day if this were only about building excitement for the Codex. Instead, there’s a rules update tied directly to a model in the Christmas box. Maybe that’s a coincidence, but to us, it sure looks like GW giving that box a little help.

The Blood Angels Christmas Box Was Already Getting Some Heat

Let’s be fair, this box was already getting some pretty rough reactions back in October. GW revealed the Angelus Assault Force on October 19, and here’s what’s inside:

  • Commander Dante
  • a Chaplain with Jump Pack
  • a Death Company Brutalis Dreadnought
  • three Sanguinary Guard
  • five Death Company Marines with Jump Packs
  • a Blood Angels upgrade frame.

So you’re getting 11 models for $255. That’s not exactly a mountain of plastic, especially when you put it next to the bigger Horus Heresy boxes. Some players even called this a glorified Combat Patrol, becasue it is very similar to the new Adeptus Custodes Combat Patrol, which also has 11 models, so you can see why.

Then there’s Dante. He’s a cool centerpiece, sure, but what if you’ve already got him? Now a big part of that Christmas box is something you don’t really need. And yeah, the upgrade frame adds to the listed value, but come on, nobody’s buying a Christmas Battleforce because they’re excited about an upgrade sprue.

Our Angelus Assault Force value breakdown had it near the bottom of the 40k lineup. The folks over at Wargamer and Sprues & Brews put it in roughly the same place, too.

Stores Say the Chaos Boxes Are Getting Most of the Attention

Now, let’s talk about what we’re hearing from stores. Just keep in mind, this part is anecdotal. Regular pre-orders don’t start until November 14, so we’re talking about early retailer orders and customer reservations here, not final sales numbers.

And from what stores are telling us, the Christmas lineup isn’t getting quite the attention they expected. The Age of Sigmar Christmas boxes sound especially slow so far.

There are two boxes getting a lot of the interest, though, and they’re both Chaos: the Cult of Destruction and the Helhunt Lance.

And really, is that surprising? The Cult of Destruction has a Defiler, Venomcrawler, Obliterators, Mutilators, Havocs, and a Warpsmith. The Helhunt Lance gives you a Knight Ruinator with alternate builds and four War Dogs.

Those are some big models. You’ve got centerpieces that catch your eye from across the shop, some solid savings compared to buying everything separately, and boxes that actually feel like Christmas presents.

Here’s another interesting part: the ordering deadline passed on November 4th. Now, according to the stores we talked to, their sales reps were asking if they wanted to order more Battleforces than they’d originally requested, except for those two Chaos boxes and the Horus Heresy ones. That doesn’t exactly sound like everything was going according to GW’s sales forecast, does it?

Meanwhile, the Blood Angels box has fewer models, and one of its biggest draws is a named character a lot of collectors already have. From what we’re hearing, it just isn’t getting anywhere near the same attention.

GW Dropped This News Nine Days Before Pre-Orders. Coincidence?

Alright, time to get the tinfoil hat out, because the dates are pretty interesting when you put them all together.

  • October 19: GW reveals the Christmas Battleforces, Blood Angels included
  • November 2: Retailers get Battleforce pricing and ordering info
  • November 4: Retailer Order Date for Battleforces (many asked to order more)
  • November 5: GW announces the spring 2027 Blood Angels Codex and Corbulo
  • November 14: Christmas Battleforce pre-orders open
  • November 27: Release day

Now, we’re not saying GW suddenly decided to make a Codex because retailers didn’t order enough boxes by November 4. Obviously, that book was being worked on long before anybody saw the Christmas Battleforces.

What we’re wondering is whether GW moved the announcement up. That’s a whole different question. You can’t just whip up a Codex overnight, but moving a reveal around on the marketing calendar? That’s a lot easier for sure.

Of course, maybe there’s nothing to it. This could’ve been planned months ago, and GW announces new stuff all the time. Still, getting a November announcement for a Codex that isn’t coming until spring is pretty much unheard of so far. Maybe the book and the Battleforce were always meant to go together.

Either way, think about it from a Blood Angels player’s side. You’ve got a new Codex and Corbulo coming in spring for the 2027 Codex Roadmap, so picking up some models now starts looking a little more tempting. Throw in those December Chaplain rules, and suddenly the Christmas box has another reason to be on your shopping list.

Whether GW planned that timing or not, it works in the Angelus Assault Force’s favor, and we’d be surprised if GW hadn’t noticed.

Final Thoughts on the Blood Angels Codex and Corbulo Reveal

We’re definitely happy Corbulo is coming back, and he is gorgeous for sure. But between the December Chaplain update and the timing of the announcement, it’s hard not to wonder if GW is trying to give a struggling Battleforce a little push.

Players seem a lot pickier about their Christmas boxes these days, too. When you’re asking that kind of money for a smaller bundle, people are going to look pretty closely at what they’re actually getting.

If the stores we’re hearing from are right, November 14 should be interesting. And if this Christmas lineup really does struggle, maybe GW will have to think differently about what goes into next year’s boxes, or maybe not offer so many Battleforces throughout the year as we saw in 2026.

We already saw Battleforces stop selling out across the board earlier this year, so GW might have a lot more riding on this holiday season than it’s saying.
