Warhammer 40k FAQ: GW Quietly Updates 9 Factions

Warhammer 40k FAQ

These Warhammer 40k FAQ updates landed in nine official PDFs on October 14, 2026 and clean up some bizarre 11th Edition rules that had players asking questions.

Unless you happened to check the Warhammer Community downloads page this week, you probably missed nine rules updates because eight faction packs and the Event Companion got new versions dated October 14, but GW didn’t even put up a single WarCom article about them.

And that’s why this feels like a surprise and a hidden update. Sure, some changes just clean up wording (and some obvious interactions), but others affect how units move, shoot, and score on the table. Plus, if you’re putting together a list for an 11th Edition event, you shouldn’t have to stumble across rules changes by accident.

ARTICLE SUMMARY:
  • Nine PDFs, no announcement: GW updated eight faction documents and the Event Companion on October 14 without a Warhammer Community article.
  • Aeldari and Callidus: Sudden Strike pile-in and consolidation moves jump from 3″ to 6″, and the Neural Shredder swaps Precision for Blast 2.
  • Sisters timing: Solemn Procession and Vows of Atonement now key off your turn and your Command phase instead of the battle round.

The What’s New Box Tells You Where to Look, Not What Changed

Updated on October 16th, 2026 by Rob Baer with the new Warhammer 40k FAQ updates.

GW Surprise FAQJust look at the Sisters PDF for an example of a big change. It’s up to version 1.4, and the What’s New box tells you the Rules Updates section on page 13 changed. Okay, but what actually changed? You’re left comparing the old wording with the new stuff to figure that out.

Penitent Host FAQAnd when you get to page 13, there are some really important changes. For the Triumph of Saint Katherine, Solemn Procession now gives you a Miracle die at the start of your turn rather than the start of the battle round. Penitent Host also changes when you choose your Vows of Atonement. You now pick them at the start of your Command phase, and they last until your next Command phase.

If you’re planning a turn around having that Miracle dice available, timing matters. Oh, and the Exorcist went from 180 to 175 points, although that change came through the app rather than the PDF.

Admech Mostly Gets Wording Fixes, With One Exception

What's New For Adeptus Mechanicus UpdateMost of the Adeptus Mechanicus updates are pretty straightforward wording fixes. Thulia Ghuld’s FAQ clarifies that you choose the affected unit after picking which Icon of War ability you’re using. Chant of Electrotraction also now targets an Electro-Priests unit without that old Battleclade wording.

Guided Retreat is changed more; GW rewrote the wording around Fall Back, including shooting, charging, and Hazard rolls for Halo Override units. If that’s a combo you use, grab the updated PDF before your next game.

Custodes Errata Got Buried Under a Codex Launch

Adeptus Custodes Changes FAQWith the new Custodes codex dropping the same week, it’s pretty easy to overlook two actual errata. First up, Superior Creation, the Auric Champions enhancement, now specifies an Adeptus Custodes Infantry model. It’s once per battle, per army, and when that model gets destroyed, it comes back on a 2+ with three wounds remaining. We figured that was how it worked when we first saw it, but the idea of a model that just wouldn’t die was pretty funny.

The Shield-Captain on Dawneagle Jetbike also now has Leader explicitly listed in its Core Abilities. That’s another one where you probably figured it already worked that way.

The Callidus Assassin Shoots at Different Targets Now

Callidus Assassin ChangesNow this one actually changes what you want the model doing. The Callidus Assassin’s Neural Shredder loses Precision and picks up Blast 2 instead. That’s not just cleaning up a typo. Instead of picking out characters, she looks better suited to going after bigger squads. So if your Imperial Agents list brought a Callidus along specifically to hunt characters, your shooting phase just changed a lot.

Aeldari Get the Biggest Movement Change

Aeldari FAQ ChangesSudden Strike’s Agile Manoeuvres now take place when an eligble unit ends a charge move, and lasts until the end of the turn.

That can double movement, which is a big deal when positioning is such a huge part of how the army plays. Then, the Seer Council’s Unshrouded Truth stratagem now specifically allows the required ingress move on the first turn.

Windrider Host also gets a new FAQ explaining how Ride the Wind works with Asuryani movement.

Three Small Rulings That End Table Arguments

Leagues of Votann Rules UpdatesNot everything here is going to change your list, but a few rulings should at least settle some arguments across the table. For Leagues of Votann, another Arkanyst Evaluator doesn’t count as the nearby unit needed for Science Guild Support’s Lone Operative protection. Basically, you can’t have two Evaluators protecting each other.

Tyranids get a Biovore clarification as well. Using Seed Spore Mines doesn’t cause the unit to lose Hidden. And for Space Marines, Kayvaan Shrike now has the Character and Epic Hero keywords, which means you can’t take multiples of him, but a list with three would have been really funny.

The Event Companion Change Is Only About Base Sizes

Tournament Companion EventIf you’re playing tournaments, you might see the Event Companion is now version 1.3, dated October 2026, and immediately wonder whether the missions changed. It looks like this time, the update only changes base sizes, so all those mission and scoring FAQs you’ve already been using still apply.

Your App Probably Had The Warhammer 40k FAQ First

Warhammer 40,000 app War Journal interface screenshotThere’s a good chance your 40k app already picked up most of these changes. The October 14 app changelog had 555 changes across 19 factions, although 439 of those were tied to the Custodes codex release.

But the PDFs and the app aren’t exactly the same thing, but they are still the written rules record outside the app, and it’d be nice if GW actually let players know when those documents get updated.

Final Thoughts on the Warhammer 40k FAQ

We’re glad GW is keeping the rules updated. Some of these fixes answer questions that needed clearing up. But if 11th Edition PDFs keep getting updated quietly while big app changes are rolling out, we’re probably going to see more of this unless GW starts telling us what actually changed instead of just handing out page numbers.

For now though, check your faction PDF before heading to your next event, even if you’ve already looked at the app. At this rate, checking the downloads page might have to become part of everyone’s weekly hobby routine.
