A new Ciaphas Cain model finally brings the Imperium’s accidental hero and his loyal Jurgen to the 40k tabletop, alongside an illustrated novel edition.
Ciaphas Cain has been propping up Astra Militarum bookshelves since 2003, but for some reason, Games Workshop never put him in plastic. Now, alongside his ever-loyal aide Jurgen, he’s getting an official Ciaphas Cain miniature. The kit even comes with a back-to-back diorama base option, so you can field them separately or pose them together on a single, larger base for the full duo presentation.
For Guard fans who’ve been quietly running “close enough” Commissar conversions for 20 years, this is one of the better surprises of the year. Especially since Black Library is also reissuing Cain’s first full-length novel as an illustrated and annotated edition at the same time.
- New Cain miniature pairs the “hero” with his loyal aide Jurgen: the Imperium’s accidental war hero finally gets a plastic kit, 25 years after Black Library put him in the books.
- Kit includes separate bases plus a back-to-back diorama option: run them as two separate models, or pose them together on a single larger base for the full duo moment.
- Companion release is an illustrated, annotated edition of For the Emperor: 15 new illustrations and 130 author annotations from Sandy Mitchell turn Cain’s first novel into a director’s commentary track.
What’s in the Commissar Cain Model Kit

Jurgen, on the other hand, is just as downtrodden as you’d expect, because he looks like he’s actually been through it all. His face is locked in that grim, just-keep-surviving expression Valhallan veterans tend to wear.
The Valhallan kit details on Jurgen are spot on and almost make you wish GW would revamp the regiment, too. Plus, in true Valhallan fashion, he’s got the thick fur hat and heavy coat you’d expect, plus the small character bits like the flask and mug for keeping Cain stocked with tanna.

For the Emperor Illustrated Edition Drops Alongside the Mini
Best of all, GW isn’t leaving out Cain’s loyal readers either. On top of the model, the Black Library is putting out the new For the Emperor illustrated edition, packed with 15 brand-new illustrations and 130 annotations from Sandy Mitchell himself.
For longtime Cain readers, this is a pretty massive deal. Plus, Mitchell’s annotation of his own first novel basically turns the book into a director’s commentary track for the story that kicked off the whole series.
And for new readers who pick up the miniature and want to know what the actual fuss is about, this is the perfect pick-up!
Final Thoughts: The Ciaphas Cain Model Is the Reveal Guard Fans Have Wanted For Decades

Pair that with Commissar Yarrick’s tabletop return earlier this year, and Guard is having a character revival that’s usually reserved for blue Space Marine Chapters.
Two legendary Commissars getting fresh plastic in the same year is more than just a coincidence; it shows which way GW wants to take the faction in the new edition. They may want Astra Militarum in front of more shelves for 11th.
No firm pre-order date yet for this one, so keep an eye on the GW New Release Roadmap heading into the summer for more details.
