Games Workshop Miniature of the Month may be finished, and the only warning anyone got was a store manager quietly pulling the signs down.
Honestly, the way this supposedly went down is almost more interesting than the missing model. There was no Warhammer Community post, email, or a little note buried at the bottom of another article. A hobbyist on r/Warhammer40k said their local store manager had gotten an internal announcement that afternoon and immediately started taking down the Miniature of the Month signage.
The thread was later removed by the subreddit’s moderators and locked, although the comments stayed up. Before that happened, the original poster said again that the manager had confirmed it after a retail meeting.
Keep in mind that nobody outside GW can verify any of that, so this is still a rumor, but it’s at least coming from a little closer to the shop floor than the usual “my uncle works at GW” post, especially when September’s reveal still hasn’t appeared after August’s Ork Boy showed up right on schedule.
GW could announce a September mini today or tomorrow and make the whole thing look ridiculous, that’s still very much on the table.
But if you’ve been watching how Games Workshop has been treating the stores that sell most of its plastic, or noticed how quietly the September price increases went out to everyone, you can probably see why nobody’s counting on a big farewell post either.
GW Doesn’t Do Goodbyes, It Just Stops Doing Things

Look at how the last few years have gone. Ranges disappear, store programs stop getting supported, and hobbyists eventually figure out something is gone because it never comes back. Even this September’s price adjustment skipped the usual WarCom treatment. It went through the Retailers’ Network on August 16 with a pointer toward the Resources section and the affected product list. After six years of pricing moves, that kind of quiet rollout isn’t exactly new territory.
GW’s Miniature of the Month May Be Dead, and Nobody Got an Announcement
So if you’re waiting for an official “Miniature of the Month is canceled” article, you may be waiting on something GW never planned to write.
The calendar is more useful, and that’s where things start looking odd. June’s mini was announced June 1. July’s came on June 29. August’s showed up July 27, several days before its August 1 availability date. GW gave hobbyists advance notice three months in a row, then September rolled up, and as of right now, there’s nothing.
That still doesn’t prove the rumor. September 2025 wasn’t revealed until September 1, so GW has already shown it’ll let the month start before saying anything. So, if you’re looking for the best reason not to bury the program yet, that’s it.
Then there’s GW’s own Miniature of the Month page, which is still sitting there telling people to visit their local Warhammer store “each month” for a free model. It could just be stale copy. That’s boring, but boring explanations win plenty of the time, and right now the most official thing anyone can point at is technically arguing against the rumor.
Deleting the Reddit Thread Didn’t Prove Anything Either Way
The original poster didn’t delete the thread. Reddit shows it as removed by a moderator and later locked, with no explanation.
From there, a good chunk of the conversation stopped being about GW and turned into people arguing about subreddit moderation. We understand why a giant community would remove an unsourced claim that boils down to “a store manager told me.” We’ve also watched enough GW rumor cycles to know deleting the post doesn’t make the rumor disappear. It just gives everyone somewhere else to argue about it.
The moderation itself proves nothing. If you’re trying to work out whether the program is actually ending, the useful stuff is what happens in stores, what GW does with the announcement schedule, and whether the existing Miniature of the Month coverage suddenly stops getting another monthly entry.
The Free Mini Was Never Actually About the Free Mini
And this is where cutting the program starts looking weird, because GW wasn’t really paying for one free plastic dude. It was paying to get you through the door.
Someone who’d normally order from whichever storefront is cheapest that week suddenly had a reason to walk into a Warhammer store once a month. Once you’re there, maybe you grab a paint, replace a brush, or finally buy that box you’ve been staring at since the last Miniature of the Month.

One hobbyist said the free mini was the only reason they made a roughly 45-minute drive, and they usually bought something while they were there. Another talked about bringing his son in, painting together, then letting him pick something out before they left. Someone else had worked the trip into lunch with his kid, and a hobby afternoon his wife was happy to see them doing.
That’s not just a pile of free minis walking out the door. Those are repeat visits, random paint purchases, starter boxes, and people building a routine around going to the shop.
Maybe GW looked at the cost and decided it wasn’t worth it. We can’t know that from outside the company. But if somebody only measured the plastic they were giving away, they missed most of what the program was actually buying.

Warhammer Stores Just Lost the One Thing an FLGS Can’t Copy
Independent stores already have plenty of ways to beat a corporate Warhammer shop. They can discount GW products, stock competing games, run bigger gaming areas, stay open longer, sell snacks, and build communities around more than one company’s release schedule. Independents move the bulk of GW’s trade business, and GW has reworked their terms more than once in ways those shops felt pretty quickly.
Miniature of the Month gave the official store something the shop down the road couldn’t just copy: an exclusive model every month with no purchase required.
That’s why commenters were already asking why they’d keep paying full MSRP at a Warhammer store when their FLGS sells the same kits cheaper. The free mini gave them an answer once a month, but if the rumor holds up, that answer disappears, and we’ve shown before how GW doesn’t seem to care about your local gaming store in the first place.
Those people probably aren’t quitting Warhammer. They’re just more likely to spend that Saturday at the FLGS instead.
The Coins Reportedly Survive, Which Shows Where GW Drew the Line
August paired the Ork mini with an Exodites collectible coin. According to the original poster in the removed thread, the coin program isn’t ending because customers have to make a purchase before they can claim one.
Same deal here; we can’t verify that either. If it’s true, though, you don’t need a flowchart to see the difference. One promotion gives you something for walking in. The other gives you something after you’ve already spent money, just like the rest of the promotion surrounding these releases.
If GW really kept one and cut the other, hobbyists are going to notice exactly where that line got drawn.
What Would Actually Settle This Over the Next Few Days
Today’s date still isn’t enough to call it, especially when GW has announced a September mini late before. There are a few things that would make this rumor a lot harder to shrug off:
- No September announcement today: suspicious, but not on its own.
- Still nothing once September actually starts: substantially more suspicious, given three straight months of early reveals.
- More stores pulling signage while managers independently tell customers it’s finished: at that point the rumor gets very hard to argue with.

The first useful answers will probably come from the stores themselves, not another round of Reddit detective work. We’ve spent plenty of time looking at what’s happening to game stores, and the people behind those counters will know pretty quickly whether the monthly routine has really changed.

For now, I wouldn’t write the program’s obituary before September actually gets here. If a new mini appears, this becomes another rumor that got ahead of itself. If the month starts, the signs keep coming down, and Warhammer stores stop handing free models across the counter, then GW has changed a lot more than one monthly giveaway.
The next question is what replaces it. Warhammer stores still have to give hobbyists a reason to pay full MSRP at a single-company shop instead of heading to an FLGS with discounts, more games, and its own local crowd. Miniature of the Month gave them one easy answer every month.
