The 11th Edition Adeptus Custodes Legends list for the codex cuts more units, sending old Forge World kits to Legends, but it also spares some as well.
If you’ve got a Venerable Land Raider painted gold sitting on your shelf, well, it just became a Legends model. Warhammer Community dropped the full unit list for the new Codex: Adeptus Custodes, so now we can actually see what Adeptus Custodes players keep, gain, and lose when the book arrives for 11th Edition in a few weeks.
Any new Warhammer Legends list always stings a little, but this one’s more of a swap than a purge, though, because the grav-tanks and Dreadnoughts from the Big Autumn Preview are sliding straight into those empty spots.
We probably should’ve seen this coming. GW spent all year pushing new plastic Custodes through Heresy, and now some of the older 40k kits that don’t match the new range are getting pushed out.
- Heresy kits finally join the 40k book for 27 total datasheets: Gyrfalcons, Pallas, Telemons, and Caladius tanks now sit next to Wardens and Allarus.
- Your older Custodian Guard models stay legal under the new Sodality names: the squad splits by weapon, but both versions play the same.
- Seven units leave matched play for Warhammer Legends with this Codex: the Land Raider, Venerable Contemptor, Valerian, Aleya, and three Imperial Armor Sodalities, all covered in our Warhammer Legends guide.
Custodes Just Became a 27-Datasheet Army
It’s been a while since the Custodes book changed this much. For the first time, the Codex pulls the 40k and Horus Heresy ranges together, which is how we wind up at 27 datasheets. Now it looks like a full army instead of a few very expensive golden units and a Rhino.
Here’s everything new in the codex:
- Sentinel Guard Sodality and Custodian Guard Sodality
- Aquilon Terminators with Solarite Power Gauntlets, and with Solarite Power Talons
- Venatari with Kinetic Destroyers, and with Verutum Lances
- Telemon Heavy Dreadnought, Contemptor-Galatus Dreadnought, and Contemptor-Achillus Dreadnought
- Gyrfalcon Jetbike Sodality and Pallas Grav-attack
- Coronus Grav-carrier, Caladius Grav-tank, and Caladius Annihilator Grav-tank
A bunch of that stuff is already in plastic if you picked up the Legio Custodes Battle Group or grabbed the Telemons in plastic, so you might already have some painted and ready for 11th Edition.
Your Old Custodian Guard Aren’t Going Anywhere
That rename sounds worse than it actually is. Custodian Guard now show up as either a Sentinel Guard Sodality or Custodian Guard Sodality depending on what weapons they’re carrying, and GW says they’re functionally the same. So no, you don’t need to rebuy your squad. We’ll take that one.
Here’s the rest of the old core that’s sticking around as well:
- Trajann Valoris, Shield-Captain, and Blade Champion
- Shield-Captain in Allarus Terminator Armor and Shield-Captain on Dawneagle Jetbike
- Custodian Wardens, Allarus Custodians, and Vertus Praetors
- Knight-Centura with the Prosecutor, Vigilator, and Witchseeker Squads
- Anathema Psykana Rhino

Adeptus Custodes Legends Cuts Hit the Tanks and the Black Library Pair
Now we get to the stuff that’s going to hurt a few collections. The Venerable Land Raider gives up its spot to the Caladius Grav-tank and Coronus Grav-carrier, while the old Contemptor steps aside for the Telemon, Galatus, and Achillus. Once GW put those kits in plastic, you could kind of see where this was going. Still, it doesn’t feel great if you painted recently.
Moving to Warhammer Legends:
- Aleya and Valerian
- Venerable Contemptor Dreadnought
- Venerable Land Raider
Moving from Imperial Armor to Warhammer Legends:
- Custodian Guard Sodality with Adrasite Spears
- Custodian Guard Sodality with Pyrithite Spears
- Sagittarum Custodian Sodality
Valerian and Aleya are a little different. They started out as 2020 Black Library celebration minis, and like many of those exclusive characters, Legends was where they eventually ended up. You can still put them on the table for casual games, and the Warhammer Legends guide explains how those rules work in 11th Edition.
It’s not all bad on the Imperial Armor side, though. The Ares Gunship and Orion Assault Dropship aren’t in the book, but they’re getting digital datasheets and will stay legal for matched play.
Those Out-of-Stock Kits Are a Re-Box, Not a Retirement
Before anybody starts panic-buying on eBay, GW says a bunch of the kits that are sticking around are only showing out of stock online because they’re being re-boxed. They’re the same miniatures, but with new packaging to reflect their use in both HH and 40k.
We’ve seen this happen with plenty of codex launches already, and it usually kicks off the same round of “is this getting squatted?” posts. Your local game store might still have the old boxes sitting right there on the shelf, so that’s probably worth checking before you start paying scalper prices.
Final Thoughts on Adeptus Custodes Legends
This really looks like GW finishing what it started when those Heresy plastics showed up back in January. At this point, we’re basically just waiting on points and the release date, and both should arrive once pre-orders go live.
Those Ares and Orion digital datasheets are still worth keeping an eye on, though. Digital-only units have a habit of quietly wandering off into the warp after a balance pass or two. If they make it through the first dataslate, then Custodes players basically get both ranges to play with.
