Games Workshop’s new Skaven Spearhead release date is September 21st, 2024. Plus, the Skaven Spearhead retail price is $145, just like the previous releases.

Is It Worth It?
This is where things get a little “scammy” if we may be so bold. Of the newer Spearheads we’ve seen, this is actually on the lower end of value for the same contents as before. Yes, these are exactly the same miniatures from the old Vanguard box, just with the Clanrats switched out for the new Easy to Build (ETB) or push-fit ones, and an increase in price.
So… it does get you a decent number of minis inside, but it’s a little lackluster. Not only is there just one new unit inside, but the value isn’t that high, and these new Clanrats are available at a discount pretty much everywhere with the overproduction of Skaventide.
Either way, this is a decent way to get a Skaven force on the table quickly if this is the only bundle you have access to. However, there will most likely be far better deals out there for most of 4th edition when it comes to Skaven miniatures.
The only thing this box has going for it is the non-Clanrat miniatures, which may be a little tougher to find these days.

What to Buy Next?
So you’ve got the Spearhead with a Grey Seer, Stormfiends, and a Warp Lightning Cannon; solid start, but rats need numbers and nasty tricks to really shine. The next step is more Clanrats or Stormvermin, because bodies on objectives win games, and they give your heroes something to hide behind.
After that, grab a Verminlord Warpseer, one of the strongest leaders in the current meta thanks to his durability, magic, and command ability shenanigans. To round it out, look at a Hell Pit Abomination or another Warp Lightning Cannon, both of which are big threats that force opponents to deal with your cheese-fueled nonsense while the rest of your swarm scurries in for the win.
OOP 2022 Version:
The Out of Print (OOP) 2022 Skaven Spearhead box was the Horned Rat’s little gift to new players. Released in June 2022, this set was packed to the brim with 25 models (yep, the same ones, as the ones above…).
At a $145 price tag and an MSRP value of $208, it gave you about $63 in savings, assuming you actually needed everything in the box.

Final Thoughts on the Skaven Spearhead
And that’s the Skaven Spearhead, part bargain, part squeaky hustle, and still a fast way to get a rat horde scuttling onto the table. It may not be the flashiest deal out there, but it sets you up with some solid core pieces and plenty of room to swarm out from there.
Whether you’re in it for the hordes of Clanrats, the chunky Stormfiends, or just to watch a Warp Lightning Cannon misfire at the worst possible time, this box gives you the chaos you signed up for.
Just remember: in the Under-Empire, more rats are always the answer.
