Codex Orks Army Rules Let Everyone Charge After Advancing

Orks Codex Army Rules

Codex Orks army rules spread the WAAAGH! across the whole game now, with a new riled up status that can land turn after turn instead of once.

The old WAAAGH! gave your opponent a giant warning sign, because they knew the big turn was coming, So they braced for it, and if they survived, the Orks usually spent the rest of the game trying to keep that momentum going. But now, the 11th Edition Codex: Orks just changes that whole rhythm.

GW split the army rule into a passive buff and a riled up status that several characters can switch on now. So instead of one scary turn, the green tide can keep creating those moments throughout the game. This is also the first codex of Warhammer 40k 11th Edition, so the Ork book is giving us our first real look at what the rest of the edition’s codexes may be measured against, right alongside the Armageddon launch wave models.

Keep in mind too that you’re used to the current 10th Edition Ork book, you’re going to be planning turns very differently.

ARTICLE SUMMARY:
  • The Waaagh! now re-rolls Advances and hands out a repeatable riled up status: GW split the army rule in two, and the part carrying the old Waaagh! punch isn’t locked to one turn anymore.
  • Riled up carries charge-after-Advance, a 5+ invulnerable save, and Assault on guns: most of the old melee package is still there, but now Orks get a shooting bonus too, which gets interesting under the 11th Edition assault rules.
  • The Stompa sits riled up permanently while everyone else has to earn it: the big git gets the benefits all game, making it faster, tougher, and much harder to simply ignore.

The WAAAGH! Stopped Being a One-Turn Trick

Now, the first half of the WAAAGH! lets you re-roll Advance moves. It’s not flashy, but anyone who’s seen a mob stop an inch short of an objective knows how useful that can be. The other half is riled up, a status units can get from a once-per-battle War Cry or another source entirely.

Best of all, Ghazghkull can also hand it out to several nearby units.

Riled up is basically where the useful parts of the old WAAAGH! ended up:

  • Charge after Advancing
  • A 5+ invulnerable save
  • Assault on their guns, which is new for this book

Honestly, that Assault bonus might wind up being one of the more useful additions here. Under the 11th Edition rules, a riled up mob can Advance, fire, and still declare a charge. Now Orks don’t have to spend the turn choosing between moving where they need to go and actually getting some shots off along the way.

Add that to what the new Boyz datasheet is already doing and the Armageddon character rules we saw earlier, and Ork mobs have a lot more ways to get where they need to be and actually do something once they arrive.

Meganobz Get Paid Twice for Riling it Up

Meganobz pick up extra bonuses on top of the normal riled up package, with GW basically rewarding the Orks already lugging around the best armor and gear. We still haven’t seen the full profile, though, so there’s no reason to start crowning them OP before the whole datasheet is out.

Either way, giving a unit another layer of bonuses on top of the army rule is still a pretty clear sign that GW wants you looking at them. We got a similar feeling from the new Nobz and Warbikes reveal, and how the elite side of this codex is filling out quickly beside what the Armageddon datasheets already showed.

The Stompa Never Has to Wait for Permission Now

Everyone else needs somebody or something to get them riled up. The Stompa, on the other hand, just starts that way and stays that way, with no War Cry or nearby character required.

What that permanently buys the big git:

  • Charge after Advancing, every single turn
  • A permanent 5+ invulnerable save
  • Assault on that ridiculous gun rack
  • Passengers who disembark are riled up for a turn

That’s a serious improvement for a model that’s spent a lot of its life functioning as extremely expensive terrain.

The passenger rule might finally give people a reason to use all that transport capacity instead of marching an empty Stompa up the table.

We’d guess the points went up, because the way the Stompa is built has never really been its problem. Getting enough value from it has been, so if the old Stompa Boyz box suddenly starts disappearing from shelves, this is probably why.

Shoota Boyz Turn a Melee Buff Into a Shooting One

The Shoota Boyz detachment gets a buff too that adds range to your guns while units are riled up, so the same status that looks like a melee tool can turn into a shooting buff depending on which detachment you’re running! Since several characters can rile up their comrades, you can spread those boosted turns around instead of dumping everything into one big WAAAGH!

Your opponent might survive the first big hit, sure,  but that doesn’t switch the threat off anymore. A Warboss and his bodyguard can still be sitting there with Advance-and-charge hanging over the next turn, which makes screens, trades, and movement a lot more awkward.

That’s a very different problem now too from the one opponents dealt with under the last codex.

Final Thoughts on Codex Orks Army Rules

GW says the detachments land next week, and those are going to tell us whether this ruleset really changes Orks or just moves the familiar rules around some. Honestly we haven’t seen enough of the full book to start calling the meta yet.

The big question is how many characters can hand out riled up and what you’re paying to bring them in your army now.

Becasue if you’re getting two or three useful sources at a reasonable cost, this looks like a much smoother replacement for the old feast-or-famine WAAAGH!. So, if nearly every useful HQ can throw riled up around cheaply, the rest of the 11th Edition codex rollout is going to have a pretty high bar to clear with their new rules too.
