Legion of the Damned Kill Team Ends Their Long Metal Exile

legion of the damned kill team

The Legion of the Damned Kill Team is finally coming in plastic, boxed against an Ork Boss Nobz Mob in Kill Team: Armageddon.

Anyone who’s ever tried to build a Legion of the Damned squad out of spare Marines, skull bits, and whatever flames they could find has been waiting a long time for this one. GW finally brought them back at the Big Autumn Preview, and after years on our list of models GW still owes us new sculpts for, they’re getting an actual plastic kit.

Armageddon works pretty well as the place to bring them back. The Legion have always had a habit of showing up when everything has gone completely sideways, and GW still isn’t saying anything about where they actually come from, so at least that part hasn’t changed.

What GW has said is that they’re an auxiliary force, which is the same treatment the Exodites got. That doesn’t tell us how far this range eventually goes, but for now they’ve got one Kill Team landing alongside the new Kill Teams on the way in 2026 and everything else happening around the Space Marine Codex Q&A in Warhammer 40k 11th Edition.

These Space Marines Get Scarier the Longer the Game Runs

ARTICLE SUMMARY:
  • Legion of the Damned: plastic at last, Primaris-scaled, with several armour marks across the squad and an auxiliary-force role.
  • Ork Boss Nobz: Kill Team: Armageddon is where they go on sale first, ahead of anywhere else the Codex: Orks crowd can buy them.
  • Killzone: Armageddon: two bunkers with their own storming rules, plus ruins, scatter, and wrecked vehicles designed to sit alongside Battlezone Fronteris.

The rules are leaning into the whole ghost-Marine thing instead of just leaving it to the models. The Legion have to solidify their connection to the material plane as the game goes on, so they’re slower and less dangerous early and keep getting nastier as the turns tick by.

By the end, they’re throwing around eldritch fire and fighting like the spectral monsters they’re supposed to be, which gives you a very different problem on turn four than you had at the start.

The models look like Legion of the Damned should, too, with skulls, flames, skeletal details, and plenty going on without turning every Marine into the exact same guy.

They’re Primaris-scaled, which probably isn’t going to surprise anybody, but the armor isn’t uniform across the squad. There are several marks mixed together, and for a unit where nobody really knows when or where these Marines died, that works a lot better than putting all of them in the same suit.

The Ork Boss Nobz Rumor Was Right All Along Too

The rumors of new Nobz arriving through Kill Team were right all along. We already saw the models in the reveal and in Codex: Orks, but Kill Team: Armageddon is the first place GW is actually selling them.

Best of all, they’re big, heavily armored Nobz loaded down with the kind of weapons you’d expect. Some have a pair of kustom shootas, others are carrying a skorcha, and they’re all built to look like they belong a step above the regular boyz standing next to them.

So even if you couldn’t care less about the Legion of the Damned, there’s a pretty obvious Ork reason to look at this box too, the same sort of split appeal Kill Team: Dead Silence had.

The Killzone: Armageddon Terrain Sneaks In a Steel Legion First

The terrain is made to work with the existing Battlezone Fronteris kits, just beat up a lot more than the stuff that’s already out. If you’ve got Fronteris pieces sitting around, you can mix this straight into the same board instead of starting over with another completely separate killzone.

The set includes:

  • Two sturdy bunkers, with their own rules for the desperate close-quarters fight when an operative has to storm one
  • Ruins and scatter terrain
  • A wrecked Redemptor Dreadnought
  • A wrecked Rogal Dorn Battle Tank

There’s also a weird little first hiding in the wreckage, because technically this is where the new Steel Legion shows up. Not as an infantry squad, mind you, but as a destroyed Rogal Dorn sitting in the terrain.

It’s not much of a debut for the regiment, but it is another Armageddon piece showing up before we get the rest, and that’s been happening throughout the 40k release roadmap.

Final Thoughts on the Legion of the Damned Kill Team

So overall, the next thing we need is the rules. GW says they’ll be coming closer to release for both Kill Team and 40k, and it has generally made the 40k rules for Kill Team releases available for free. Once those show up, we’ll have a much better idea of what GW means when it calls the Legion an auxiliary force, and how useful they’ll actually be in 40k.

We’re also still waiting to see whether this Kill Team is the whole Legion release or just where GW starts with them.

Hopefully the Legion aren’t disappearing again after one box, and both them and the Exodites get their own faction release for Warhammer 40k proper in the near future.
