New Ork Boyz previews are here, and an Ork victory at the Siege of Death Mire’s Hive Heart unlocked brand-new detachments for Warhammer 40k.
After getting stomped over the first two weeks, the green tide finally pulled it together. Ork players claimed the Hive Heart, earned a first look at the new multi-part Boyz, and unlocked a brand-new detachment. If you play Orks, this is exactly the kind of campaign reward you were hoping for.
There’s something here for Warhammer 40k 11th Edition Space Marines, too. Along with the campaign results, Space Marine players also picked up a new detachment, so both sides walked away with something for the overall tie.
The Green Tide Clawed the Hive Heart Back in Week Three
- Death Mire result: the Orks took the Hive Heart in 53.7% of battles, though the Siege as a whole ended in a draw.
- New Ork Boyz: the first pics show a multipart kit carrying both a slugga and a shoota, with the full dakka option list on one sprue.
- Two detachments, the Vengeful Hosts and the Equatorial Hordes, are both live now, each costing 1 Detachment Point.
The WAAAGH! got the job done. After falling behind in Weeks One and Two, Ork players rallied in the final week and won the Hive Heart battle zone with 53.7% of the battles. They also overran Gallows Spaceport for the in-store games, cutting off Imperial reinforcements and leaving the remaining defenders stranded outside the walls.
Put both results together, and the Siege of Death Mire ends in a draw overall. That leaves the hive city locked in the kind of grinding war the Imperium has been facing even after it won the Outriders as a prize for week one.
Either way, if you’ve been following the Death Mire campaign, a stalemate feels like the most 40k outcome possible, and it also fits the wider 11th Edition rollout, with Armageddon still very much on fire.
New Ork Boyz Break Cover, and the Dakka Options Stand Out
This is probably the preview most people came to see. To celebrate the Hive Heart victory, GW revealed the first pics of the upcoming multipart Ork Boyz kit, which offers much more flexibility than the Armageddon push-fit version. Every Boy can carry both a slugga and a shoota, and the full range of dakka options fits into a single mob without giving up a single choppa.
Here’s what comes in the kit:
- Upgraded shooting options, including a big shoota, rokkit launcha, and burna, all usable in the same squad.
- A Nob with plenty of choices, including a kombi-skorcha, kustom choppa, power klaw, or a two-handed big choppa.
- A squig and an ammo runt, because it wouldn’t be an Ork kit without them.
That’s a noticeable upgrade from the 20-model Armageddon box kit, and it matches the direction the Orks codex is taking in 11th Edition.
The Vengeful Hosts Give Jump-Pack Marines a Boost
The Imperium didn’t leave Death Mire empty-handed either. The Vengeful Hosts detachment focuses on jump-pack infantry, letting them re-roll hit rolls of one whenever they arrive from Ingress or make a charge. It’s a straightforward boost that helps assault units hit harder once they’re in the fight.
GW highlighted the Blood Angels as a natural fit, and they sit alongside the new 11th Edition Space Marine detachments and the earlier Armageddon tank detachment.
The Equatorial Hordes Push the Green Tide Forward Early
The Orks may have come away with the more interesting reward, to be fair. The Equatorial Hordes detachment leans into the beasts and gits of Armageddon’s jungles, giving Boyz and Kommandos Scout moves before the game begins. For an army that wants to get into combat as quickly as possible, that’s a useful boost and fits how the Orks codex already plays.
Both detachments cost one Detachment Point and are now available on the Warhammer Community Downloads page. They’ll also be added to the Faction Packs and the 40k App in the next rules update.
Final Thoughts on the New Ork Boyz & Detachments
The campaign is over, but the war for Armageddon isn’t. Perhaps best of all, the Ork release wave isn’t finished either. Between the comeback win at the Hive Heart, the first proper look at the multipart Boyz, and two new one-point detachments, GW packed plenty into this update as 11th Edition keeps rolling.
We’ll be watching to see how these Boyz fit into the codex once the full kit and datasheet arrive soon™.
