The Space Marine Captain on Bike is back from Legends, and GW is giving him a full plastic kit alongside the new Codex: Space Marines.
The (firstborn) Captain on Bike spent the last edition as a Legends datasheet with no kit, so anyone who wanted one had to buy a Chaplain on Bike and reach for the clippers.
Now he’s coming back in plastic alongside the upcoming Codex: Space Marines. GW sometimes brings old models back from Legends when there’s enough uproar about it being missing, or just because they feel like it.
The actual answer might simply be that the new detachments are pushing some Marine armies toward faster, more aggressive lists. Either way, if you play Marines, the most interesting part is what happens when he joins Outriders now.
- Plastic kit lands with the codex: no separate release window; he hits shelves the same time as Codex: Space Marines.
- Cleave 1 after a charge: the Captain passes it to his whole unit, and GW is pointing him straight at the new Outriders.
- Three weapons, five heads, two poses: power sword, thunder hammer, or plasma pistol, plus a scabbard and a choice of driving or parked.
Cleave 1 On The Charge is the Reason This Captain Leads Outriders Now!
GW gave us only one rule here, but it may be the most important. Attach the Captain to a squad of Outriders and the whole unit picks up Cleave 1 after it charges, with GW specifically pitching the combo as a way to clear hordes off objectives.
What GW actually confirmed:
- Leader for Outriders: the pairing GW named directly, not something we’re guessing.
- Cleave 1 after a charge: goes to the unit, not just the Captain.
- Target profile: GW is talking about enemy hordes, so we expect the rest of the datasheet to back that up too.
One point of Cleave isn’t suddenly going to rebuild every Marine list around bikes, but Outriders were already quick enough to choose what they wanted to fight. The bigger problem was not doing enough once they arrived. Giving the unit some extra help on the charge at least starts working on that problem.
With the green tide getting the first codex of the edition, GW isn’t exactly being subtle about the sort of targets it wants these bikes chewing through. We’d expect the upcoming Space Marine faction packs to fill in more of the picture, while the 11th Edition FAQ should sort out anything the codex leaves fuzzy.
Three Weapons And Five Heads Means Nobody’s Captain Looks The Same
If you’re more interested in building the thing than arguing over datasheets, the kit has plenty to work with. The right hand isn’t locked to one weapon, and GW included the scabbard either way, so the sword still has somewhere to go if you build him holding the plasma pistol.
- Right hand: power sword, thunder hammer, or plasma pistol.
- Heads: five, split three bare and two helmeted.
- Bike stance: driving forward, or tilted at rest with a boot on the ground.
The resting pose is probably the option that will make the biggest difference between builds. Most bike characters end up locked into the same charging-forward silhouette, while this one can actually look parked without needing you to start cutting joints apart. Add the extra ornamentation on the bike and the Captain’s cape, and it should look like a command model without needing much extra work.
That’s also been a running theme with the other model reveals in this codex wave. Army ideas that used to mean conversions and bits hunting are getting actual first-party kits (most of the time) now.
Final Thoughts on the Space Marine Captain on Bike
What we’ll be watching now is whether the Captain on Bike is a one-off comeback or the start of GW pulling more shelved HQ options back into the range. White Scars and Blood Angels players have been kitbashing biker Captains for years, so seeing GW finally make the model people were already building themselves is really cool to see.
There’s still no price or dated pre-order window, only that he’s arriving at the same time as the codex. For now, the Codex: Space Marines release date is the one to watch out for this fall.
