Are you tired of searching for the correct base sizes for your Warhammer 40k miniatures? Look no further than this comprehensive reference and 40k basing guide that includes all the Games Workshop base sizes for different types of models, from small infantry to large monsters and vehicles.
Base Size Reference Guide Updated For 10th Edition
Here is a short list of different base sizes for Warhammer 40,000 miniatures that can be very helpful when painting or assembling. We have a more comprehensive list below by faction and unit name for you as well.
40k Base Size | 40k Model Type For Warhammer Bases |
25mm Round | Small Infantry Size |
32mm Round | New “Standard” Infantry Size |
40mm Round | Mid-sized Infantry & Characters |
50mm Round | Large Infantry or Teams of Models |
60mm Round | Monster & Small Vehicle Base |
80-100mm Round | Bigger Monsters & Vehicles |
90x52mm Oval | Vehicles & Walkers |
120x92mm Oval | Flying Vehicles & Walkers |
170x 105mm Oval | Knight Walkers & Monsters |
30mm Clear Round | Small Flight Base |
55mm Clear Round | Large Flight Base |
A nice thing to point out is that so long as you discuss things with the opponents that you play with, you can usually use any base size you want in 40k. Unless you’re in a competitive tournament environment, base sizes don’t matter much, assuming you are reasonable with it, i.e., don’t go putting an Ork boy on a Primarch base.
Age of Sigmar Warhammer Bases Sizes Guide
Curiously, there isn’t an official Warhammer 40k reference for base sizing, even though there is a guide for Age of Sigmar Warhammer Bases:
Games workshop actually regularly updates the FAQ for base sizes in the Age of Sigmar. So, if there’s a change, you just need to check the FAQ, and you’re good to go! Warhammer 40,000 base sizes are, unfortunately, a little bit more of a guessing game.
Warhammer 40k Base Sizes Reference Guide
This Warhammer 40k Base Size Reference Guide is a comprehensive list of different Games Workshop base sizes for miniatures that can be very helpful. Most of the time, it’s nearly impossible to find the exact “official” base size for Warhammer 40k models!
While the correct bases are sent out with new Warhammer 40k models if you ever buy anything second-hand, use third-party alternatives, or convert your models, you have to use online resources or GW’s own website (if the items are still listed for sale) to figure out the correct Warhammer bases.
Here are all the current Warhammer 40k base sizes included in the most recent model kits purchased new from Games Workshop, organized by faction and model name.

40k Drukhari Tantalus Measurements & Base Size Comparison
In summary, the Tantalus on a 170mm base is like a shark in the water—dangerously sleek but still within the rules of engagement. If you’re feeling particularly rebellious (and let’s face it, we’re talking about the Drukhari here), go bigger, but you might catch some side-eyes from the peanut gallery at your next game. Either way, the Tantalus is guaranteed to make an entrance—base or no base.
Drukhari Tantalus Base Size Comparison
The Tantalus is a truly eye-catching Dark Eldar model, known for its sleek curves and undeniable sense of “don’t mess with me” floating just above the battlefield. But when it comes to slapping this big beauty down on the table, a question arises: What base should this elegant death machine rest upon?
First off, let’s clear the air—Forge World, the creators of the Tantalus, did not package it with a base. Why? Maybe they thought it was too cool for one, or they just wanted to let hobbyists figure it out like a sadistic puzzle. Regardless, it’s up to you to give this behemoth a platform that matches its gravitas.
Warhammer Bases from Gamers Grass.
Most folks have settled on a 170mm oval base, the same size as the Raider. This feels like a reasonable choice because it complements the Tantalus’ long, narrow profile. It’s Warhammer bases that give it the right amount of presence without making it look like it’s trying too hard to hog the limelight.
Tantalus Measurements
Now, you might be thinking, “But wait, isn’t the Tantalus bigger than the Raider?” You’d be right. The Tantalus is about 29cm long and 15cm wide, which definitely makes the 170mm base a little snug. Some hobbyists have gone rogue, opting for the Oval 195x120mm base, often used for things like Imperial Knights.
This adds some extra stability and gives it more space to breathe, but there’s a downside—it starts to look like the Tantalus is living beyond its means, sporting a larger base than it really needs.
In terms of height, the Tantalus hovers at around 8cm. Thanks to its low profile, it’s not towering over the battlefield, just elegantly skimming across it, much like the Drukhari would through realspace.
WTC Warhammer 40k Basing Guide
When it comes to Warhammer 40k, there’s a reason players are obsessed with precision and accuracy—and it’s not just for getting those perfectly painted miniatures to look their best. Enter the WTC Basing Guide (which you can download here), an often overlooked but essential part of competitive Warhammer 40k.
The WTC Basing Guide serves as the final word on what base sizes your models should be rocking when you bring your army to the table. It dictates precise measurements for every unit type, ensuring no one gets the unfair advantage of squeezing more models into cover or stretching that charge distance just a little too far.
The beauty of the WTC Basing Guide is that it takes the guesswork out of matching base sizes. It’s like the Marie Kondo of miniature war gaming—if your base size doesn’t spark joy (or at least fit within the mandated range), it’s time to make a change.
Some might grumble that re-basing an army takes time, but ask any serious competitor, and they’ll tell you that the consistency it provides is worth every moment of gluey fingers and precision clipping. Plus, let’s be honest, it’s a great excuse to give that ancient Tyranid Warrior a glow-up.
For example, Space Marines (who, let’s be real, are already OP enough) are strictly bound to 32mm bases for their standard infantry. No more of those sneaky 25mm bases for your chunky Primaris Marines, buddy. Similarly, your beloved Custodes are sticking to their 40mm, towering over the battlefield as they should, without hogging even more space than they deserve.
The Warhammer Bases guide ensures that every tournament player is on an even playing field, at least when it comes to base size. You can focus on your list-building and tactical prowess without worrying if you’re about to be out-based by some cheeky player trying to get a few millimeters of extra wiggle room.
Ultimately, the WTC Basing Guide isn’t just about rules—it’s about maintaining the spirit of fair play.
