Combat Patrols Description
Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol boxes are a fantastic entry point into playing a new army or expanding your current collection. Each box contains a starter selection of miniatures, providing a solid foundation for a playable force. These boxes are designed with both newcomers and seasoned hobbyists in mind and offer decent values (generally).
Within each Combat Patrol box, you’ll discover an assortment of finely detailed miniatures representing the various factions of the Warhammer 40k universe. From the stalwart Space Marines to the sinister forces of Chaos to all the Xenos factions, there’s something to suit every taste and playstyle.
On top of getting the miniatures, 10th Edition has a self-contained ruleset to play games with nothing more than these boxes (we have the rules below). The smaller-style games let you play with your new miniatures, learn the basics of 40k, and get ready to expand your army for full battles! If you’re looking to get into the game, this is a great way to do it!
Overall, Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol boxes are a fantastic buy for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the game. Their diverse selection of miniatures, new game modes, and good value make them the perfect choice for building and expanding your Warhammer 40k army.
Games of Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol (Separate Game Mode)
Games Workshop has introduced a new game mode called Combat Patrol, which was released in the Warhammer 40k 10th edition. This game mode is designed to be simpler and quicker to play compared to a full game of Warhammer 40k. It is ideal for new players who want to get started or for those who want to play a full game during their lunch break.
Combat Patrol Balance
To ensure fair play, each Combat Patrol is balanced against all the others. This may seem challenging when looking at some of the more elite unit box sets, like Space Marines or Custodes. However, Games Workshop has used two methods to balance the boxes against one another:
Firstly, the models in each box set have a particular loadout that players are supposed to equip their models with. Secondly, the Combat Patrol versions of each faction’s datasheet army rules are different from their main Index. These datasheets are simpler, and armies have access to different Stratagems and enhancements.

Plus, in our chart, below, you can see how all the Combat Patrol boxes compare to one another value-wise!

Best of all, these charts are all based on the 2024 GW price update, so you have the most current comparison information for your hobby dollars!

The Adeptus Mechanicus are often consumed with the relentless pursuit of archeotech, leaving little concern for the frailty of their allies’ flesh. Their latest Combat Patrol box is brimming with awe-inspiring cybernetic monstrosities, poised to purge dig-sites of any contamination.
Unfortunately, like most of the 10th Edition boxes, this doesn’t have a ton of value, but still saves you some cash if you bought all the units separately.
Models | Unit Name | Value |
10 | Rangers | $55 |
3 | Serberys Raiders | $62.50 |
1 | Tech-Priest Manipulus | $42 |

The Unforgiven makes a return to the world of Combat Patrol with an exciting new box set designed for the 40k Combat Patrol game mode. Inside the box, you’ll find an impressive collection of 19 miniatures, featuring a commanding Captain in Gravis Armour, a formidable trio of Bladeguard Veterans, a squad of five powerful Hellblasters, and a versatile unit of 10 Intercessors. The box also includes two Dark Angels Primaris Upgrade sprues and three transfer sheets, each boasting 221 decals, offering a wealth of customization options. It’s worth noting that these decals are unique and distinct from the Dark Angels Upgrades and Transfers mentioned earlier.
Models | Unit Name | Value |
1 | Captain in Gravis Armour | $42 |
3 | Bladeguard Veterans | $60 |
5 | Hellblasters | $36 ($62.50 for 10) |
10 | Intercessors | $62.50 |
2 | Dark Angels Primaris Upgrade sprues | $30 (each sells for $15, but this is the old upgrade sprue) |
Dark Angels Combat Patrol
Total MSRP: | $230.50 | |
Savings Versus Box Price: | $62.50 |
Honestly, with $30 of the value being made up by the old upgrade sprues (pictured above), this really isn’t a great deal. If the box had 10 Hellblasters, it would be pretty decent. However, if you don’t want the captain and the upgrade sprues, you actually lose money.
But… if you do need everything inside, this will save you some cash and get you a decent starting force and some upgrades. The newer 10th Edition Combat Patrols have been underwhelming so far, and this is following the trend, but it at least has more value than the previous two we’ve seen.

Delve into the smaller-scale battles of Warhammer 40k with the awe-inspiring Combat Patrol: Adeptus Custodes. Leading the patrol is a fearless Blade Champion, who has the option to muster five Custodian Guard alongside a choice between three Allarus Terminators or three Wardens. Although the box includes all the miniatures, their immense power means you’ll need to carefully select which ones to deploy in each game of Combat Patrol.
Models | Unit Name | Value |
1 | Blade Champion | $42 |
3 | Allarus Terminators | $60 |
5 | Custodian Guard | $62.50 |
5 | Vexilus Praetors | $62.50 |
Adeptus Custodes Combat Patrol
Total MSRP: | $227 | |
Savings Versus Box Price: | $59 |
This basically gets you one of the units for free, so if you need everything inside, this is a decent pickup. While it’s not the highest value we’ve seen in a box, it is a good starting force. It gets you a lot of the core units, and with how expensive each unit is in points, the value seems higher when compared to something like Orks!

Morgrim’s Butchas are unhappy about the lack of large monsters and vehicles in Combat Patrol. As a result, they are venting their frustration by unleashing their aggression on others. The group consists of a powerful Beastboss accompanied by 20 Beast Snagga Boyz and supported by four Squighog Boyz. This makes them a formidable force in Combat Patrol, with a high potential for impactful charges.
Models | Unit Name | Value |
1 | Beastboss | $42 |
20 | Beast Snagga Boyz | $120 ($60 for 10) |
4 | Squighog Boyz | $65 |
Orks Combat Patrol | ||
Total MSRP: | $227 | |
Savings Versus Box Price: | $59 |
Do you want a lot of Beast Snagga Boyz? If so, this is a great box for you. If you want the regular Orks, you may have to pass on this one. If you really want to play this style of army, it’s pretty good value, as it gets you the Squighog Boyz for free!
The newer boxes in 10th Edition haven’t had as much value, but getting so many Boyz is always fun. Plus, this is totally different from the Orks’ last combat patrol box, so you still have options if you want to get more ‘regular Orks.’ That being said, the value between these two is $40 less, which in game terms is at least a whole character or half a squad.

Of the 10th Edition Combat Patrol boxes we’ve seen so far, this is actually one of the better. The value is higher than most, and it has a good mix of units inside. It will be a decent buy to start up a new force, even though it doesn’t have a wild number of points inside.
Plus, if you do need everything inside, this will save you some cash and give you a decent starting force to boot!
Which of The 40k Combat Patrol Boxes Has the Best Pricing and Value?
If you look just at the numbers, the Sisters, Daemons, and GSC Combat Patrol boxes come out as winners based on pricing and value. But if you look at the units involved, the Drukahri really comes out as the winner, with everything in the box being useful and included in almost every Kabal list.
The Death Guard box does have a ton of value, but it comes mainly in the form of Poxwalkers, so that is hard to gauge. It is the box for you if you want a lot of Poxwalkers.
The Deathwatch and Grey Knights Combat Patrol boxes are the clear losers in terms of pricing and value. That’s because if you don’t need the characters, you basically get no real value.
Frequently Asked Questions About Combat Patrols
Warhammer 40k’s Combat Patrol is a game mode that is suitable for both novice and experienced players. It is characterized by small armies that engage in fast-paced and balanced battles, making it an exciting and challenging experience for all players. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Warhammer 40k Combat Patrols that we have seen.
What should I consider before buying a Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol box set?
Before purchasing a Combat Patrol box set, consider which faction appeals to you both aesthetically and in terms of play style. Each box is designed to provide a balanced starting force for that faction, so it’s also a cost-effective way to start or expand your collection.
Review the contents of the box to ensure it aligns with how you want to build your army, and check online for reviews and unboxing videos to understand what you’re getting inside!
How does a Combat Patrol box set benefit my Warhammer 40k collection?
A Combat Patrol box set is tailored to give you a complete, game-ready force of about 500 points. This is ideal for small-scale games or as the foundation of a larger army. These sets are usually priced more affordably than buying the units separately, making them an economical choice.
They also can include exclusive models or configurations that can add unique elements to your collection. It also usually focuses on the generic troops of the army, with no vehicles, which make a great base to expand on.
Can I play in official Warhammer 40k games with just a Combat Patrol box set?
Yes, Combat Patrol box sets are designed to be immediately playable for small-scale battles, typically around 500 points. This makes them perfect for Combat Patrol and Incursion size games, which are official game formats supported in Warhammer 40k.
These sets provide a balanced force, so you can start playing as soon as the models are assembled and painted. However, you will need to expand your forces before playing balanced games of regular Warhammer 40k.
What are the best strategies for playing with a Combat Patrol box set?
When playing with a Combat Patrol box set, focus on understanding the strengths and synergies of the units included. Since these sets are smaller forces, each unit’s role is magnified, and effective use of each model is crucial. Learn the special rules and abilities specific to your faction’s units in the set.
Practice managing your resources effectively and aim to achieve the objectives of the game mode you’re playing. With so few models, you need each to perform and get objectives.
How can I expand my army after starting with a Combat Patrol box set?
After starting with a Combat Patrol box, consider the type of playstyle you enjoy (do you like big blocks of infantry, tons of tanks, elite troops, or a super fast playstyle) and go that route. The opponents you face regularly can also determine what units to add next; if you need to destroy tanks, get heavy support; if you need to fight over objectives, get more infantry. Look at adding units that complement the strengths or mitigate the weaknesses of your initial force.
For instance, if your box set is heavy on infantry, you might add vehicles or heavy support. Also, consider purchasing additional units that can share the same battlefield role but offer different tactical options.
Either way, whether you are a new or veteran player, these boxes are a great option to try out a new faction or play a quick game. You can easily decide which box is best for you and your budget. So, don’t wait; grab your Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol box today!
